Customizable hotkeys are one of my favorites new features, hotkeys in Generals were hard to remember and even harder to use because they were spread all over the keyboard. I've been experimenting with hotkey configurations for several days, and I think I might have a fairly good set up (inspired by Gridkeys from Dawn of War). This is what I've done:

The top nine (3x3) production buttons are mapped to a 3x3 grid of keys, Q through C. The bottom left most button (only used for the Crane) is mapped to F. No other bottom row buttons are used in the game right now, so they are unmapped.

The production structure tabs are mapped to Shift+Q-T, switch subtabs is mapped to Tab (this works since I never have more than two of a structure type, but even if I did it would be alright).

Unit commands (the things in the bottom right) are mapped to Shift+A-F.

Sell=Shift+Z
Power=Shift+X
Repair=Shift+C

Stances=Alt+A-F (default, I never use these anyways)

Stop=Ctrl+S
Attack Move=Ctrl+A
Reverse Move=Ctrl+D
Aggresive Move=Ctrl+F
Force Move=Ctrl+G
(The last two I never use anyways, I just moved them to the Ctrl keys for consistancy's sake)


I think that covers everything that I changed. It seems to work pretty well, the first game I played useing it I was definately slower than with the mouse, but thats to be expected with any new setup. I think with practice this will be very good. With this configuration you can reach all the hotkeys just by keeping your hand in a WASD-like configuration, leave your pinky on Shift so you can hit it quickly, and if you need Ctrl you can move it there.


If any of you guys have edited the hotkeys, what you have changed?

I configured the hotkeys under the numeric pad.

The production buttons are from NUM 7 through NUM 3 in a 3x3 grid. Added also the NUM 0 and NUM DECIMAL for slot 10 and 11.

The production structure tabs are mapped under NUM LOCK through +.
Stop unit=NUM ENTER

I haven't changed anything else yet. And indeed I am still missing something.

I'm thinking of these other keys (Assuming when you have a keyboard like this: http://img.clubic.com/photo/00349163.jpg)

Sell=INSERT
Power=HOME
Repair=PAGEUP

Attack Move=DELETE
Reverse Move=END
Assault Move=PAGEDOWN

Next Subtab = SCROLL LOCK

Then I saw Derek's hotkey configuration and giving it a spin.

Just to share it with you here is the hotkeys.ini from the demo with Derek's configuration. This file can be found in C: \Documents and Settings\<username>\Application Data\Command & Conquer 3 Tiberium Wars Demo\Profiles\<profile name> where <username> is your name and <profile name> your CnC3 profile name.

Copy paste the code into the hotkeys.ini file and fire up the demo.

Most mouses/mice have mouse3 & mouse4, which are very valuable. I want to use them for the most used hotkey/functions used by pros. Any ideas?

Also, when I clear all default buttons and define a part of them a la Derek's config, the rest remains undefined (e.g., select all units). How can I keep them at default while replacing only the ones recommended by Derek.

Does C&C3 have something analogous to config.cfg in Counter-Strike? If so, why isn't there a section where users can upload their configs and vote on them - just an idea...

i like the default keys atm, i ,may change later on; I use the command buttons more offen then anything else moving my armies.

You can't bind the mouse keys in game, it might be possible to do it in the configuration files, but you would need to figure out what the mouse buttons are called in the configuration (assuming its even possible).

When you are configuring hotkeys in game there is a button that looks like a keyboard, click it to bring up a list (on the left) of all the commands that do not have an on screen button, such as your "select all units".

Yes it does, but its hard to find. The location on my computer is:
C:\Documents and Settings\User Name\Application Data\Command & Conquer 3 Tiberium Wars\Profiles\Profile Name\hotkeys.ini

The catch is, Application Data is a hidden folder, so you have to turn view hidden folders on to access it.

today i spent a few hours trying custom keys. i tried yours derek; i dont like it, i tried my own, which is mostly the same way; still didn't like it. it seems you sacrofice screen paning/movment for pressing keys( i use arrow keys to look around mostly), or somthing... i just didn't find it faster... BUT i have been using these commands the same way from the beginning of generals. therefore i think if someone new to RTS or CNC games should make custom keys.

The solution is simple: Don't use arrow keys to scroll. The tutorial only mentions one of the four ways to scroll: Right click scoll, and for a very good reason. It is hands down the fastest and most precise way to scroll around the map. Use it.

For more detail, lets go over the four methods:
-The edge of the screen: This is the way CNC tutorials used to teach you, even though right click scroll dates back to TS. But this is slow and requires moving your mouse to the part of the screen where you don't give commands.
-Arrow keys: You can leave your mouse alone, but its still too slow and ties up your hands, so you can't properly use hotkeys.
-Mini-map: This is what the pros in other games (such as WC and SC) use because their games lack right click scroll. This is fast and precise, but it still requires you to move the cursor to a part of the screen away from the action.
-Right click scroll: This is not only fast, but unlike any of the other methods, you can control the speed: The more you move the mouse the faster the screen moves. Its amazingly precise as well, at first you may have some trouble but with a little practice you can go to any location on the map in under a second* and be within half a screen of your target. Last but not least, your cursor can stay in the center of the screen, where it is most useful.

*Assuming a 1v1 or 2v2 map.


I hope this helps you understand why you should be useing right click scroll, and even more I hope you take this lesson to heart. I'm not trying to be insulting or anything, but there are right ways and wrong ways, you've been doing it the wrong way, this is the right way. Use this and you can move your free hand from the arrow keys to the letter keys, where you can reach more keys and better utilize whatever hotkey layout you choose.


I would also like to supply an update on my experiance with the hotkey layout I provided. It has my 100% seal of approval. After extensive use in the demo and now in the full game, I have found no problems with it. I'm sure there are many more hotkeys layouts that work, and you may search for one that best suits you if you want, but this one I can guarentee works.

What I do is very similar to Derek's with one major difference

I find that rather than having the production queue keys as SHIFT + WHATEVER, I have my production keys as Q - T, and I use ASD and ZXC for the first two rows and SHIFT + ASD for the bottom row of the 3x3 production queue. And after reading dereks post i have also made crane F :)

I find that the speed of having a single button for the queues and the main buildings really helps speed of your intitial BO, and in the late game when your producing units and buildings from the bottom row the few milliseconds is not so crutial there.

just another way i guess

I'm actually probably going to do something like that for Kane's Wrath. The new units will most likely push the WF build menu to the fourth row, and 'F' won't be enough.

I have my production buttons mapped to my numpad, just like mrdasher.

Anyone here have the Nostromo SpeedPad? I'm seriously considering dropping the $50 on it. Combined with the customizable hotkeys, that will be some serious hotkey ownage.

I have a Saitek gaming Keyboard and was wondering if i would be able to hotkey my extra number pad (i can use my left hand). I am not experienced at all with hotkeying, because never used it since i always played the computer on RA2 and RA2:YR.

Any body using this?

Also, I am not understanding where the hotkey folder is on the full game?

Yeah. He posted his a while back and they worked for me. I've only made 2-3 changes tops.

I can't even beat a medium enemy yet. I am pretty pathetic at the game but it is tons of fun and also i like the hotkeys.
