Does anybody know any good AntiVirus software that doesn't hog system resources? The virus scanning software I have on my computer says I have 23 viruses, trojans, and spyware on my computer, but doesn't seem to be able to remove them.

Well for one thing what virus software do you have, second a good one is McAfee, if your willing to pay. If I remember right a good free one was AVG. There are some threads below this one if you want to find out more.

From my experience:

McAfee and Clamwin suck.
AVG Free and Norton are awesome.

Where do I get Norton or AVG free?

The antivirus software I have is a trial version of stopzilla, and something i downloaded off tucows called pc tools antivirus.

I did a scan with AVG free, and now the computer doesn't even start up properly. It turns on, shows the Windows XP loading screen, and then I get a BSOD with an error message, and then it restarts. Can someone give me any help on this subject?

Repair install windows (this re-installs windows core files but leaves the programs etc so the viruses and trojans will still be there). Then use either of the programs recommended by fenring, they have the highest detection rates. Although antivir comes with an annoying built in ad. If that dosent work then re-install windows completely (wipes everything).

Kaspersky with anti hacker is the best, AVG free is useless as are most of the others. Also you can download Kaspersky and use the 30 day free trial, you will see its superiority.

I run AVG free on all PCs in my house (a fair few), never once had a virus that wasn't blocked. I also use it to scan the hard drives of PCs and laptops sent to me for repair using an external hard disk caddy, and it cleans them up a treat.

I've actually heard that AVG was a resource hog. I know for a fact Norton is. If I was to an recommend order of products, it would be:

McAfee total protection or Internet security suits
Kaspersky ( Though I've never used it, I've heard great things about it)
Norton ( If you were to go with Norton though get the corporate edition, home user editions are ****y)
AVG

I've used McAfee on multiple comps and works wonders. Also like I said above don't get any of the versions of norton that you would get from somewhere like walmart, complete ****. I've heard Kaspersky is good but have personally never used it. Only reason I'd mention AVG is because it's free. Anyways, in my opinion McAfee is the way to go.

AVG is not a resource hog. It barely uses any memory at all. Here is proof.

AVG only uses three processes. Those are the 2nd through the 4th items on the picture. It uses about 1.3MB of memory when running.

AVG free has no worm protection also multiple vulnerabilities have been found in AVG Anti-Virus's file parsing engine which allow attackers to overflow internal buffers and cause denial of service although this has been dealt with, I can assure you there are more, I however will not post them. There are some exploits even if you have AVG pro although much fewer . Hope your not doing taxes or online banking or the like on those systems.

You might want to 'Spring clean' your pc - http://forums.cncden.com/showthread.php?t=19717. :)

Me & quite a lot of others "in the know", or just from personal experience, have found Avast to be a lot more effective now (it has both caught up with, and surpassed AVG).

AVG also seriously "annoyed" me with the confusing message they gave regarding the upgrade from 7.1 free to 7.5 free - I had many phonecalls from friends/friends of the family asking me what virus scanner to get now that AVG "had to be bought" - all because the warning message 7.1 gave you was incredibly misleading, and said how 7.1 free would no longer be supported, and you could buy the professional version online - it only vaguely mentioned that 7.5 free edition was supported just fine.

But that's by-the-by - Avast I feel is more powerful now!

Just 1 note; Personally, I went in to settings, "sounds" section, and disabled sounds entirely in Avast. They annoyed me, and are on by default Razz Play with other settings there to suit yourself. I disable the animated icon when scanning for instance, another pet annoyance.

Yes, a spring cleaning always helps your PC's performance. Though on what OneWiseSith said, that may have been what it was. I may have been confusing a couple of them. O well. I still recommend McAfees Total Protection suite, even though it costs, it is still a great product.

There is something I would like to add, viruses leave their mark in your regestry - best thing to do (if you know the filename where the virus originated, sometimes the file name isn't the obvious one) is to look through your regestry, but do that with caution.

I remember having a virus that reappeared after I got rid of it, only finding its entry in the regestry I managed to rid it finally, I did this in safe mode mind you...
