View Full Version : Tips for dealing with Devastator Warships?

I'm still working on the GDI campaign and so far the largest problem causing unit is the Devastator Warship with its ridiculous range. I find it frustratingly difficult to maintain any kind of front lines.

I imagine a fleet of 10-15 of these Devastators in multiplayer would be a nightmare. Anyone want to offer this n00b some tips on how to mitigate these?

Ways I get them out...

-Mammoth Spam. I know they aren't meant to be Anti-Air, but they'll pack a punch.

-Pitbulls

-Load APCs with Rocket launchers

-Use firehawks

a couple of gdi firehawks with anti air missiles equipped. Or mammoth tanks does the job decently :D ir just many pitbulls and rocket soldiers inside apc's if you love to click around alot :p

FH and Mams pretty much dominate anything scrin based, Mams with there 4 missiles will tear any scrin cap ship apart if they get in range and also always bring pit bulls to run down low health cap ships

FireHawks are very useful vs air if you equip them with the AA missles, couldn't have finished the GDI campaign without them(or just not as fast). :p

Im just curious, can the orca attack air units. I've only tried this during the demo, as I havn't had time to play the full version yet but I would try to use my orca fighters to hit air units but it wouldn't do it. Just asking because the orca fighter should be your main air unit.

Nah, ORCA can only hit Land based units. That's whythey gave the FH the option to switch payloads.

I never use ORCAs' to be honest - Lots of FH's, takes out any Ground and air unit with ease.. If there isn't too much AA around :P

The orcas are mans best friend against tripods. Even with the shield an orca will rip in it half.

Your best bet against the Devastators is the firehawk, or eight of them to be exact. Just tell eight of them to patrol the area where the warships keep coming in at, and I guarantee that you won't even lose a single firehawk with this strat, especially when they reach hero status.

yea i think the best anti-air unit in this game is the firehawk set to anti-air missles.

Actually it's the stealth tanks, with a swarm of venoms coming in a close second.

stealth tanks can't be spotted untill they are in fireing range and then it is too late :)

venoms lack the firepower to do real damage to these ships, usually supported by a carrier or some fighter aircraft

i disagree, if you take 1 firehawk and 1 stealth tank and compair anti-air abilities you will see a firehawk will totaly outdo the stealth tank,

1. stealth tanks do spam rockets but each one has very low damage.
2. firehawks anti-air damage is massive about 2-3 can take out any air unit execpt the mothership.
3. stealth tanks are stealthed; but firehawks have their teleport ability. which i think is better.
4. if you have 20000$ and spend half on stealth tanks and half on firehawks with anti-air you will see the firehawks are much more handy. and taking out air, and bombing the heck outa ur stealth tanks...

The thing is that you can't SEE the stealth tanks until it is too late, and if things get too hot, you can simply fall back and hit the enemy again, but this time from a side they haven't covered properly. (In short - MICRO!)

As for the Venoms... well, you're really supposed to spam them in order to be truly effective. Ten or more usually do a nice job.

BTW, did anyone know that the Vertigo can actually engage air units!? I never knew that until the GDI mission in Rome when I sent out a squad of FireHawks to kill the Vertigos en route to my base, only to find out that the bastards ACTUALLY SHOT DOWN MY FIREHAWKS WITH LASERS!!!!!!:dead:

Well if your a smart GDI player it won't be to late, you will see them long before they come. ( GDI orca deploying sencor drones all around the map :P)

Yea firehawks attacking Vertigos is susicide if there is a overwelming swarm of em ;) .

but too dependent on a base

If I'm reading this right, all you do is set some of your Firehawks to bomber mode and have some sort of ground units like predators or other ground units in support of them. You don't ever want to go just one type of unit like just predators or just Firehawks.

honestly i only use fhs for suicide runs on enemy bases

- - - - -

my line of thinking is that fhs are more vulnerable during an attack on your base - with the fhs running sorties to stall the enemy my primary concern would be to protect my investments - because i like to have the enemy lose more resources than what i lost in the attack...
