With me being a pet owner, I'm more than a bit alarmed with all this tainted pet food that has been discovered in the United States. Over 100 brands of dog and cat food have been recalled over the past few weeks, and the list keeps growing. Mostly it's limited to generic products though. I buy brand name stuff, so as far as I know I'm ok with what I'm feeding my cats, and none have been sick lately. What I don't understand is how all this could have happened in the first place. Doesn't anyone do any safety testing anymore? I understand wheat gluten that was imported from China was contaminated, and that tainted stuff was used in products since last year. Someone surely did drop the ball on this one. The people manufacturing this stuff should have taken steps to make sure it was safe in the first place. Actually, I thought they were suppose to do tests to insure it's safety. Or does that only apply to human consumption? I think of my cats as part of my family, and I'm sure the majority of pet owners feel the same way I do. Oh well...only in America.

It's just terrifying. Also, the fact that some of even the name brand foods have been contaminated as well. I've heard that someone purposefully contaminated the food batch, not just the wheat gluten I'll keep updating this thread (http://forums.cncden.com/showthread.php?t=19281) with all the pet food brands.
I just hope this mess gets cleaned up.

Although we dont believe it to be from the pet food, we found out my cat has kidney failure and we are having to put her to sleep tomorrow. It really sucks, we have had her for close to 15 years. I will miss her greatly.

Please accept my condolences pcnerd. I know what it's like to have to have a beloved pet put to sleep. On August 17, 2005, after 14 years, I had to have Samson put to sleep, and I've lost a few cats that have been hit by vehicles. It's never easy to say goodbye, knowing it's the last time.

Thanks Lion. Its really hitting my family hard. I hate the fact that I have been away at college only to come back for this to happen. Had I known, I would have held off college for a couple months. My mom is taking it the hardest because with me away at college, our cat is all she has since my dad works all day and she is home by herself.
We have lost Five cats out of around the Fourty some-odd cats we have owned at one point in time over the last ten years. It never is easy. Two lived to be Eight-Teen.

I allso thought they would have some sort of scanning procedure, but apperently that is not the case, there is alot of products and they would be overwelmed to try to test all the products... atleast thats what I heard on the news. They need to set a specific branch to take on the task of testing such products, its pretty retarded that this isnt already in place.

They test the pet food befor it starts to work its way in the market. After that.. they don't worry about it. Same goes for most food aslong as it isent associated with a disease like Mad Cow ect.
