View Full Version : Lion's Daily Blurb - Mon., Tues., April 9-10
I'm hoping the weather warms up in my neck of da woods so I can start the mushroom and stump meat season. Every year about this time, providing we get warm weather, I go hunting for the best eatin one could ever sink their teeth into. I'm sure everyone is familiar with mushrooms, but not so familiar with stump meat. Around here we call it 'chicken of the woods'. It's also called the Oyster Mushroom because it taste like Oysters. I find it on old tree stumps and sometimes on dead logs. You can see a picture of it HERE (http://www.cncden.com/news_pics01/oyster2.gif). I roll it in flour, then fry it slow (low heat) in real butter till golden brown. You can eat it plain, or put it in a sandwich. A gallon jar fetches around $25 dollars, so there is money to be made if your willing to spend a few hours in the woods. I don't sell it though. I freeze what I don't eat, and it keeps for about six months or so if frozen properly (air tight). :yummy:

Well LION I hope the weather warms up for ya! I bet you have to be really quick on your feet to go huntin' for these babies. I bet you have to sneak up on them huh!
It sounds really good but you know what, it is still a mushroom. I thought you were going for some elk or something! I think I saw these things when I was in Vermont for the summer. Did not think about eating them though. :hyper:

Well, there is a certain element of danger when hunting for them. You have snakes and bugs that come into play. Snakes LUV to hide around old dead trees. And we have black bears as well. I usually scout out the area before things like that though, and I carry a pistol and knife as well. :D

Interesting, I didn't know a lion would be afeard of a bear. Anyways, I try to refrain from consuming fungi. :dismay:

Nice lookin shroom their Lion. I do quite a bit of mushroom hunting myself. My family's favorite is the Kraus Glucke (pic below). The kids like to call it "tree brains". It grows in Autumn at the base of dead or fallen pine trees. You have to be quick though because it is a favorite of the local wild boar population. The mushroom has a mild beef flavor and we too roll ours in flour and fry em up. :yummy:
