Error and game crashes

Hi all,

This one is not for me this is for my mum so if you need anymore info than I give please bare with me cos remember I will probably have no idea wht you are asking me to find out unless it's put in dimwit terms :D

Anyway mum is now playing the GDI against Scrin missions and she has not had this problem until now but the game keeps crashing, she is up to date with patches the game crashes and the error says NV4_disp on the game.

She has run a stability test and it came back with -

Plug and Play Monitor
NVIDIA GeForce 6600
1024x768
WIN5.1 Service Pack 2
DirectX 9.0c installed
Generic application error.
ERROR: -2005530518
Source: EarthDX9

and also it says it is running at 500fps yet it should be running at 900+

When she goes back in the game plays okay, she managed to complete a mission but it crashed out again in the middle of the next mission.

Any ideas??

hmm, no real clue, but i've noticed other people having problems on certain missions with frashes and freezeups, try checking those threads.

900+ fps?! At 640x480 resolution or something? ;)

It likely has to do something with the Grahpic card drivers, so I'd suggest installing the latest ones. Get them from here (http://www.nvidia.com/content/drivers/drivers.asp).

Weird she hasn't had the error before though. Maybe she should try to re-install the game? (iirc you can backup savefiles so that she doesn't lose her campaign progress)

Unless I'm getting stuff mixed up, aren't the graphics capped at 30fps?

Fps is probably capped indeed, not sure what's the limit though. 900+ frames per second is close to impossible. :p

Yorkie, where does it "says it's running at X fps"?

Sorry for leaving this a few days before giving more info but I have been a bit busy and also needed my mum to answer the questions asked.

@ Spider first of all I did do a search for anyone with the same problem but came up with nothing :( thanks anyway

I have checked with mum and she has an up to date video card, so the only other question to answer is about the fps thing which I know nothing about so mum did me a screen shot to show what she was on about.

That's a benchmark to test your graphic card, seems it's working correctly. As I said above Yorkie, did she install the latest drivers? :)

Yeah sorry Max, she has all the latest drivers.

It's very difficult posting questions for other people sometimes cos I haven't got this problem and so don't know all the ins and outs of whats going on with the machine, so sorry if I seem a bit vague sometimes :(

What did you use to benchmark your card?
I am asking because, I would like to test mine.

Is it only Tiberium Wars that crashes, or does it happen in other games too? 'NV4_disp' error makes me think of nVidia. I'd try uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers, maybe the game, there's not much more I can suggest. :(

I suggest benchmarking with 3DMark (http://www.futuremark.com/), which is used a lot in reviews. Be sure to compare your score to others' who used the same version. ;)

I know I have been too lazy to come back to this but the problem seemed to have resolved itself until now that is, I got an email from my mum today so I have copied it for your opinions as I know nothing about this stuff.

Because the video card had stopped working, it would not let me do a print screne.

After restart i got send error message, so I did.

It told me to 1) Update drivers. I have done that twice now, reinstalled the drivers.

2) Turn Hardware Accelerator off, so I did.

Now the game will not play because it says I have it turned off.

See if anyone knows of maybe a better driver that doesn't cost the earth.

It may take me a while to get back with answers to any queries as I am not around very often as might have been noticed earlier in this thread.

did she uninstall the old drivers before installing the new ones?

sometimes they become corrupt if the old ones were not uninstalled first

Some possible causes of this could be:

The video card going bad or overheating due to it's cooling fan not working - would require replacing the video card.

The video card and/or system overheating due to insufficient case cooling - In this case you would likely hear increased noise from the processor fan spinning up to high speed, and you can check it by taking the side panel off the computer to let out hot air to cool it off some to see if this helps, and if this is the case, then you could add another cooling fan of replace a cooling fan with a more powerful one.

The power supply going bad, or being barely sufficient to power all of the components of the computer, so when the processor and video card try to draw more power to run the game, the power supply can't deliver - this would require replacing the power supply (with a more powerful one in the second case).

Okay two more emails from mum but in reply to earier post she did uninstall her drivers then reinstall.

In answer to the second reply I have received the following emails

Another game crash.

Wednesday Device driver got stuck in an infinite loop.

Today Thread stuck in device..

I am trying it without a side on to see if that makes any difference.

I have another problem now, not c&c, after I put the pc on, the screen comes on ok but takes about 10 minutes before it lets you do anything.

Annoying :(

It also did another stuck in a loop thing while she was playing today so she has now given up on C&C.

Although I have loved C&C for years I am starting to really hate it now, I think mum should sign up on the Den and post cos I am nowhere near as computer literate as she is but oh well never mind.

Has she tried re-installing the game? You could save all the files for campaigns vetc. on a flashdrive or outboard hard drive. Otherwise her computer might not have enough RAM memory to run for more than a mission and a half. I have had the same problem and it turned out to be that the computer didnt have enough memory.
