According to THIS STORY (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,266374,00.html), on Monday a gunman went on a shooting spree at Virginia Tech University, killing 31 people and injuring over 20 more before ending his own life. It is not known at this time why he decided to start the senseless deadly rampage in the first place. I'm sure details will be coming out over the next few days and weeks. Obviously students, faculty, and their families are horrified and in utter shock. This is quite a large university with over 25,000 students enrolled in various classes, and over 9,000 that attend classes on a daily basis. The shooting on Monday is the largest mass murder in US history by a lone gunman. Of course, people started questioning where campus security was at, and how something of this magnitude could possibly happen. We live in a free and open society. I think it's fair to say no matter how much security was in place, it's nearly impossible to prevent such an incident, as history has already taught us.

EXTRA NOTE: In a news conference today, the gunman was identified as 23 year old Cho Seung-Hui, a South Korean native. He was a student at Virginia Tech, and was an undergraduate Senior English Major. He was here in the USA on a 'resident alien visa'.

He was responsible for an earlier shooting on Monday morning that took place in a dormitory on campus, and also for the mass murder that took place in classrooms several hours later.

An Israeli lecturer who died in the massacre at a U.S. university saved the lives of several students by blocking the doorway of his classroom from the approaching gunman before he was fatally shot, his son said Tuesday.

Students of Liviu Librescu, 76, a holocaust survivor who was an engineering science and mathematics lecturer at Virginia Tech for 20 years, sent e-mails to his wife, Marlena, telling of how he blocked the gunman's way and saved their lives, said the son, Joe.

"My father blocked the doorway with his body and asked the students to flee," Joe Librescu said in a telephone interview from his home outside of Tel Aviv. "Students started opening windows and jumping out."

A 76 year old man who survived the holocaust and then went on to accomplish great things only to die at the hands of a lunatic...I'm speechless. A testament to his character...he gave his life to save his students by blocking the path of the killer. :(

I believe we will hear more stories of some courageous individuals who risked their own life to save others. Thank God for these people otherwise it could have been worse.

We live in a free society and in the next few days you will hear more about gun control than ever before. These kinds of incidents are so sad but legislating gun controls is not the answer. This will bring out the Jesse Jacksons and Al Sharptons of gun control. There is not a political answer for someone going off the deep end. How can you police something like this? You really can't because it is so irrational.

My heart goes out to all the people now affected by one crazy person going on a rampage.

I agree with Lion, there's nothing campus security could have done - all they're there for is to shoo away skateboarders, loiterers and discourage drunken confrontations. When armed by a gun wielding maniac there's nothing anyone but armed police can do.

This is horrible. But I can't wait to hear what the Government is going to do about this.

"Giving the axe to residential alien visas".

Such a horrible tragedy.

what the hell could that have meant?

looks to me like there is going to be a hell of a lot of speculation and rumor and very few facts

i hope this isn't exploited to be another reason to ban GTA 4

It's indescribable.

And with regards to gun control, there's no doubt they'll be out. And nobody seems to realize... I live in an area nationally renowned for binge drinking. Legal age, 21. You know how many people my age (under 21) could get any kind of booze whenever they want?

All of 'em. There is no way gun control is going to put an end to this, because you know any maniac who wants one will find an easy way to get one.

What I want to know is why this is how much it takes to show the media just how petty and pointless Anna Nicole and Don Imus and such really are in relation to life.

Jack Thompson has already appeared on Fox News yesterday to blame video games. Dr. Phil has now jumped on the anti-game bandwagon and launched an attack on video games from this event on Larry King Live. Im too lazy to find the links, but you can find them in the Gaming section on Digg.

So tragic and sad. Should have been isolated after the first morning encounter.

I went to reply and you had added the Extra note! Yes exactly it's nearly impossible to prevent that type of thing, but the fact remains the shooting stopped for two hours..If I was a family member of anyone involved I might be asking how did that much time pass without something being done? A lot more of that will come out as we learn more....

I have friends in that area, love and prayers to ALL those affected by this senseless tragedy.

There was a two-hour delay because the police got report that the shots were an isolated incident implying the gunmen likely fled the campus. An honest mistake, but a very big one.

I can't imagine being involved in such an ordeal. It must have been terrifying to see your classmates being mowed down. It constantly amazes me how a person can be so selfish as to lose all regard for human life. I can't imagine the pain the families are feeling right now. My heart goes out to them.

This is truly sad, prayers to the families who where affected. Unfourtunantly a few days after this some graffiti was found in my high school saying bombs are going to go off on friday. I personally think its a bunch of dumbass kids trying to ride the wave of this tragedy.
