View Full Version : Lion's Weekend Blurb - April 21-22
As predicted, the Virginia Tech Massacre of 32 students and teachers is having a bad domino effect, and it's even happening in my neck of the woods here in small town USA. At two of our local schools, a bomb threat was called in, some dude brought a gun to school, and a letter that was taped to a bathroom wall that threatened to kill named students and teachers. In all cases the schools were shut down, and of course police, dogs, and the bomb squad were brought in. The gun ended up being a water pistol, and there was no bomb found. I'm sure the letter was put there for a fear factor, or whatever. For an area that is mainly a farming community, this kind of stuff is unheard of. I do believe there's coming a day when armed guards will have to be posted at all of our schools, and exterior doors will need to be locked during school hours.

maybe I should carry a pellet gun :D
But really, I hope I never see the day were we have to post armed guards at schools and trust me , it'd be elementary schools, a kid in my neighbor hood was shot by fifth graders,

6 kids got expelled recently from my school over a pellet gun. Considering it's a school of less than 500 kids, that's serious.

I highly doubt that the Viriginia Massacre had anything to do with any of those incidents.

Well the University of Minnesota had a bomb threat on Tuesday or Wednesday, so they closed several buildings and called off classes.
I go to a different campus, the University of Minnesota Duluth, but they sent out emails informing us of what happened at the main Twin Cities campus.
As for security, I do not believe my campus is ready for such an event. Back in October 2004, 3 kids snuck into the construction area for the Swenson science building and vandalized the place and turned on the water, thus vandalizaing and flooding the place. Took them 3 days to notice the damage, which ammounted to 8 million dollars. Then the guy who helped pay for the building wanted to give the kids scholarships? wtf?
My university has very few cops on duty, and they spend most of the time (at least evenings and weekends) policing the dorms and looking for underage drinkers, any drugs/ alcohol and partiers. So I am not confident the campus police have their priorities straight and that they would be able to handle such an event.

That kind of stuff happens all the time so theres no reason to believe that the recent string of incident had anything to do with Virginia.

The people benefiting from the massacre can go **** themselves. The people who think the gunman was badass can go **** themselves too.
There was a bomb threat at my school quite a few years ago... the idiot that sent it used a computer from inside the school. They tracked it down and caught him, he was expelled and kicked out of the country (I'm living in China, I go to an american school). Another guy was kicked out similarly because he posted that he was making pipebombs on his xanga... kinda like the Columbine High School's Eric Harris.
I can't believe people would actually try to use the massacre as an excuse to make fake bomb threats so they can skip a day of school... seriously.
"Then the guy who helped pay for the building wanted to give the kids scholarships? wtf?"
He probably did this so the guys would come out and identify themselves... then get owned :o

When I was in school we were allowed to have our firearms on school grounds, so long as they were secure in our vehicles. Ammunition too. Back when my father was in school hunting was allowed on school grounds at certain hours.
Not anymore.

Nah, they did a study on this after Columbine and a few other 'popular' (Widely televised) violent acts. Violent crimes or violent attempts at crimes actually statistically increased the week following the initial violent act. It was an actual statistic; that's why i'm comfortable saying that this is almost definitely the same.
For instance, you know that after boxing championships that violent crimes in the city the championship takes place in actually increases? No lie, this is just a cool psychological phenomenon. Since the champion boxer is actually awarded for being violent (positive reinforcement), standard citizens actually increase in their aggressiveness and more crimes occur. Again, this is actually a scientifically-tested occurance. Kinda cool.
