This Tutorial was made by me in bfme2, it is out of date but im sure it can help some, a few things may have changed but what ever, here it is.

River Tutorial

This tutorial is to help you make your own realistic river, in is tutorial you will learn how to layout a river, then you will edit the river’s attributes. You will want to learn how to make a realistic sea first, because this tutorial will be using lake water bodies within the river, after you have learnt that you will learn how to add a lake body of water to enhance the effect and reflection of a river.

1.1 Create a riverbed for your river to lay in.
1.2 Creating a beginning of a river.
1.3 How to add new river pieces
1.4 Laying the river out.
1.5 adjusting the river’s attributes.

1.1 Create a riverbed for your river to lay in.
It is essential that there is a grove in the ground that is at least 10-20 feet below for the river to lay in, and 1-4 feet deep from the river level height for unit to be able to cross;
For this you need to use the “height brush” to dig out a river line, you can press H or click on it on the top tool bar to use it. Now you need to Bush Width and Bush Feather Width, for an average river, Bush width would be about 6-12 and bush feather width would be about 3-5, then set the height about 10-15 feet below the river level is sufficient. Then you will begin digging it out and after maybe use the smooth tool.

1.2 Creating a beginning of a river.
In World Builder you should see 3 bluish tools above, each of the tools are for creating lakes/seas, waves, and rivers. Click on the icon for the river, then click once somewhere on your map to place a little blue square. After the blue square appears click on it and drag it over to another location and it should make two squares with a blue line between them. After making two of them go back to the first square and drag again and again until you get four in total that make up a massive square. You now have your starting of a river, you can click on any blue line and rise the water level up until you see it.
If you do not see a blue square after you place it, it is probably because you have the Show Trigger Area Unchecked, to turn it back on you must click on View > Show Trigger Area and make sure there is a checkmark beside it.

1.3 How to add new river pieces
Time for a easy but essential step. To add more columns for the river click on the river tool again, and click on one of the blue lines, and you should now have 2 squares and 3 black lines all making a rectangle. If you do not click right on the line it will begin to make another river, if it does create a river click on the extra created river and press the delete key to delete that extra river, then retry again.

1.4 Laying the river out.
Now you arrange the river to the river bed and add plenty of new river joint pieces, you can also click and move the black lines which will move both sides of a joint arrange. Practice on making a river turn.

1.5 adjusting the river’s attributes.
Now after the river is laid out you must adjust the attributes of the river’s texture, height, speed, name, alpha, etc. Simply select one of the rivers blue lines or squares and you should see the river’s options.

I hope this tutorial helped you! Good luck, and have fun.
