It's that time of year again when the snakes start their journey through my yard to get to the nearby creek. They come down out of the mountain, but have to cross a road to get to me. On Tuesday I had an encounter with my first snake of the season. Fortunately it was all but dead. A car had run over it in front of my house. It was still kickin around though. At first I thought it was a copperhead. That's a poisonous snake, and I do my best to avoid them. My neighbor came by and said it was a water snake. Looked like a copperhead to me, but he claims he's a snake expert. He is half redneck, so I suppose that qualifies him as an expert. He asked me if he could have the snake. Said his kid liked to play with them. I happily agreed to let him take the snake off my hands.

Yep it's that time of year again. As the weather starts warming up we get a few snakes around our house too. Last year we had a family of California King Snakes roaming around the back yard. They are very cool black snakes with florescent yellow stripes around them. When they move it looks really cool. And then there also the gopher snakes. (They always look to small to eat gophers). Then there are the rattlers. We haven't seen one of those yet!
As fer your nayber woo luvs to play wit hem. Its like running with scissors! :nuts:Its all good and fun until someone gets hurt.
P.S. Maybe you skin them and fry them up in a tortilla!:hyper:

It's like the great migration....with snakes. :D
You know, I'd be careful if I were you. You never know what is hiding in the grass just outside that door, and there's nothing like getting bitten by a poisonous snake. Though for your local rednecks, this must be a shooting gallery, ya know? ;)
We have mostly Copperheads that lurk around. My neighbor across the creek found one in a pile of leaves last week...about a 3 footer. That's big for a copperhead in my neck of da woods. Most of the snakes I find in my yard are garter and water snakes, and those cute little black snakes they call eastern ring necks. The outside kitter cats kill most of the snakes for me.
I use to have a cat, Samson, who occasional brang snakes in the house with him. We'd just leave the side door open for the cats in the summer. He brought in a couple water snakes, so we had to keep the door shut after those few incidents. The snakes were still live!

I don't think I'd like Copperheads slithering around my house. When I lived in California we had problems with the local Rattlesnake population, a friend told us to put some Peacocks on the property and our snake problem will be history. It worked for him, but we never got around to trying it. I just kept packing my revolver loaded with snake shot everytime I mowed the lawn.
Here in Germany I do a lot of hiking and I ain't seen a snake yet, and I've been here for 15 years...wierd. :squint:
