This past Friday the small town of Greensburg, Kansas, population around 1,500, was nearly wiped out by an F-5 tornado packing winds in excess of 200 MPH. About the only thing left standing was a large grain elevator (read Story (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,270395,00.html)). All businesses on main street, and 95% of residential homes were destroyed. I can't imagine going through something like that. What's very sad is the fact soon after the storm had done it's damage, looters came into the town to pick through the remains of people's belongings. What a GREAT insult and disrespect for those who lost nearly everything they owned. I suppose things like this bring out both the worst and the best in people as THIS PICTURE (http://www.cncden.com/news_pics01/greensburg_cat.jpg) reveals. Shows an eleven year-old boy with a cat he rescued. The cat doesn't look like a happy camper in that pic, but I'm quite sure he's thankful someone is at least giving him some comfort. Weather peeps have been predicting that we'll be seeing an increase in violent storms, and an F-5 tornado is up at the top of the scale.

that is why I'm happy I live in Ontario since we don't get tornadoes. Still, I feel really bad for those people that had to go though that and even worse for the survivors since they have lost quite a lot and are going to have it quite hard for the next long while.

I just hope everything works out ;)

Wow that is amazing! That tornado was 1.7 miles wide and had winds of 205 MPH. I have never seen a tornado but that one was huge. I live in California and the earthquakes can get pretty powerful.

When I first saw the story I wanted to go out there and help them rebuild. But the cleanup is gonna take a while to get done. How did that cat survive? (It must be that 9 lives thing)

So sad to see the looters were out there. Kind of hard to use a TV set when there is no electricity. After seeing the looting from Katrina and now this, I am beginning to think that having a gun would be a wise decision. :shifty:

Some of the looters were 4 soldiers from Fort Riley and a reserve police officer. (scumbags pretending to help)

I've been to Greensburg before. It has a huge hand-dug historical water well. It is about 80 feet deep if I recall correctly. Also at the museum was a 200 pound meteorite.

I went through an F5 way back in the day, don't remember much of anything being barely 2, but its one of those foggy things where you hear your parents talking and you're all "yea, didn't this and this happen, and this happened, and blah blah blah". I can see the images in my mind, imprinted like 9/11, yet you aren't really sure if its a dream you concocted or not...

But my thoughts and prayers are with the victims here. Not the funnest thing to go through... and now I deal with earthquakes in CA with i'm not at school in TN... haha

My tornado. Under path and damage, St. Mary's is literally an 1/8th of a mile from where I was living at the time, the School Board Administration Building less than a mile... not fun man.

I couldn't imagine having my house ripped apart while I'm standing in it.

If I was a billionaire though, I'd build them a new town for nothing.
