Sorry if this is on the wrong forum, i didn't see a newb section.

Just wanted to say cool forum. I'm new to modding.
First try was last night but my file won't save after changing it.

Don't worry i'm sure the answer is already out their and i'll search a great deal before i ask questions. Also i just downloaded slees tutorials. I look forward to reading them

I'm starting small first. Just editing stats first, before i try to make any "real" mods.

Not easy, hard, pain in the ass, etc.

I can deal with that. Might not like it, but i can deal with it.

I finally figured out how to make my changes stick. Kinda made me feel like a tard when i figured out how easy it was.

Tonight i work on gmax. I've used it before so it more time consuming than hard. But I figure the first time i convert the file format aught to give me a headache.

Not to mention skinning it! Ive never done that before. I have photoshop 7, my new version of Gmax gets a registration number today, and i have Renx also.

Do you think i need anything else?

Big Extractor if you don't already have one. This on is really easy to use and work real well.
http://gendev.gamemod.net/page.php?file=camap_down
If you want to make new Camos
http://commandandconquer.filefront.com/file/DDS_Converter;51572
Converting files to DDSs for skinning models.

Also get photoshop/gimp to make skins.
Do you know how to UV map?

I don't have the slightest about UV mapping. So i know i'm in for a treat when i start that.

I downloaded gimp, camos and dds programs

i already had big extractor and have been having fun with it

You need to UV map in order to for skins to work properly.

at the moment i'm working on figuring out renX. It will change the .W3D to .gmax, but gmax wont open it.

I also built my first model. I found a great tut that explained a basic tank and made my modeling 1000% better. It also answered the question i asked in another thread.

Ive installed renx were it wants to go and in the gamepack folder of gmax. neither one worked. So i don't know what i'm doing wrong.I was using RenX :dunce: :freek:
I now have renegadetoolinstaller2 :)

i guess that was the prob.

now to learn to uv map :uhh:

Actually i'm not haveing any luck importing W3D models into gmax. I can view them in the W3D viewer but thats it.

I want to butcher a few zh models first before i import mine from scratch.

Also i know once i see a zh model i'll be able to count polys but how many is normal for a vehicle. i know a troop is about 150.

the reason i ask is i made a mobile patriot model on a 2 ton truck from scratch and it was 2348 polys. i figure thats probably way to many.

thanks

Max poly count for vehicles should be 1K.

some cool models can be found in those forums(for personnal use) and some others can be found in the download section. pm if you can't figure out how to get them to work, if you use any and i'll tell you.(you will need winrar to open the files)

http://commandandconquer.filefront.com/

some decent skins and a few units for download (i only modded generals from here, im not sure about zero hour and i kiss the feet of whoever made the blackhawk/bradley mod)

http://gendev.gamemod.net/page.php?file=modding

some helpful tutorials here

i found this stuff pretty helpful when i just started (im still a newb by far) and there are more but i've got to track them down first if you want them (one's about changing infantrys weapons [more weapons to download in the better infantry model forum at sleipnirstuff, or on one of those resource forums]).

I finally found the invisible import W3D button in RenX.

So I'm butchering models to my hearts content.

UV mapping really sucks though. Maybe I'm doing something wrong, but it seems their should be a better way.
