View Full Version : Lion's Bi-Daily Blurb - Wed., Thurs., June 6,7
On Saturday an 18-year old girl from Overland Park, Kansas went shopping at her local Target store and hasn't been heard of since...until today. They found her body in a wooded area about 20 miles from where police believe she was abducted. You can read the full story HERE (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,278676,00.html). Another senseless killing in the good ole USA. What can be done to prevent such tragedies from occurring in the first place? Well, we know it's impossible to round up all the perverts and nut cases that plague our country, so people, and in particular teenagers need to be more aware of their surroundings when out and about. I'm NOT singling out teenagers...so please don't flame the Lion. Statistically teenagers and younger peeps are more at risk. One of the best things you can do is travel in pairs. There is safety in numbers. Carry a can of Mace and learn how to use it properly. IF you must go out at night, park in well lighted areas, and take along a friend. If you can't find a friend to go along, then don't go. Those of you who want to offer other suggestions on how to prevent such tragedies from happening, please feel free to chime in. You may just save a life...
thats totally sad, but you got to try to lock up as many of the physcho cases outthere as you can. And yeah everything Lion said is true and also learn Karate or some funky stuff like that, some schools learn girls self defence at gym class so they can protect themselves and thats a good thing to do.

I am a big advocate of lowering the age for concealed weapons permits. I think if that was lowered and you had to pass some kind of qualification, it would allow for younger people to be safer.

I'd rather have the oppurtunity to shoot back than to just be taken against my will. Besides, I'd almost be willing to bet I'm a better shot.

There isnt exactly safety in numbers. You can pick one person off at a time. Then the numbers go away.

They ought to tie that bastard up and leave him in a room alone with the girl's father and a pair of wire cutters.

Your wrong...there is safety in numbers. Most stalkers are looking for a lone person. They are less likely to attack if there is more than one person.

Touche. I was thinking in military terms. It also depends on the stalker. Could be maddened freak type or creepy type.

My take on prevention of crime is capital punishment. I believe every convicted murder, and rapist should be put to death. That would most definitely discourage pyschos from commiting crimes.

Your right Lion. Stalkers typically go for the lone, weaker targets. Stalkers dont have the balls to confront more than one person.
Also, less control laws would be nice to so law abiding citizens can defend themselves easier. I think the CCW permit age limit is set at the right age. I'm 18, almost 19 and I think I need to mature a little more before I need a CCW. I can look back and see how much I matured in a year, so age is a good thing. For a girl, a taser or can of (dog ) mace would be a nice defense weapon.

A "real" psycho will commit the crime regardless of the punishment, but at least it could prevent other criminals from :shifty:... doing crimes.
Yet what needs to be done is actually to prevent the psychos from becoming psychos (...does that make any sense?:hmm:).
And yeah, weapons need a person to be mature enough, otherwise, you may end up doing more harm than good.

Very true, what everyone has got to accept no matter how many laws, no matter how harsh the punishment, it will not eliminate the crime of murder - I hear people say "Do something", I am not sure what else the police can do to prevent murders - you cannot start banning things because it is a potential "murder weapon" because criminals will aquier the "murder weapon" from the black market.
I know someone who's father has been put away for 20 years for a murder he did not comitt - when people start searching for the culprit they want to bring down the first person they point the finger at, this is especially true with the Jill Dando case in 1999 (A TV presenter here), some guy was put in court and they found him guilty, while there has been tonnes of doubs about that conviction, yet everyone wants to find someone to put in jail - even though the defendant may not have actually comitted a crime, after all everyone is innocent until proven guilty, right?
What I am trying to say is do not turn a murder investigation into a finger pointing witch hunt, otherwise the real culprit will get away and end up locking away someone completly innocent, it has happend here many times in Britain in high profile cases
