View Full Version : Lion's Daily Blurb - Monday, June 11
About twice a year I make a pilgrimage to one of my fav places to visit, the Gettysburg battlefield. It's less than an hour's drive from where I live, so not far for me. Over the weekend I watched the movie Gettysburg to prep myself, and today I'm headin out. A friend of mine wanted to take his son there, so I volunteered to play the tour guide. I've read many books on the civil war and have visited several major battle sites over the years, including Antietam and Manassas battlefields. For those of ya that have never been to Gettysburg, I'll take some pics today and post em on the DEN later this week. I'll probably be gone most of the day, so updates will be a tad skimpy.

Have a good time :)
I want to go there. I saw a documentary about it once; They've actually found musket balls that hit eachother mid-flight, so thick was the fire there :happysad:

Great movie.
Also had the opportunity to visit the battlefield a few years back. Even with a full day under the belt we still didn't have the opportunity to see everything we wanted to see. It's a beautiful place with a lot of history, damn shame its being encroached upon by urban development.
Been to Eisenhower's farm?

Eh, I dunno. It might be a very important battlefield turned monument of sorts from the Civil War, but it really doesn't serve as much else. If someone wants to develop there, I say let them: at least it will go to serving someone in a more practical way.

I was there several years ago, very somber to say the least. All most every hill has a monument telling you what happened there. The thing I will always remember though is the museum which had collected bullets that while flying through the air had hit and combined with another bullet fired from the opposite direction. To think that so much lead was flying through a relatively compact space, I find it hard to believe that more men didn't die. As for the movie Gettysburg...great movie, probably one of the greatest war movies. The book it is based off of, "The Killer Angels" is also a great book so you should check that out aswell.

Gettysburg is no different from most of the other American battelfields surrounded by urban development. Just look at what happened to the battlefiels for Lexington and Concord, which are now occupied by streets and urban development.
I have been to Lexington/ Concord, and there was nothing remaining of the old battlefield, save some relics in a museum and a monument/ statue signifying where the battlefield had been, before being overrun by development.
Additionally, I visited a Civil war battlefield in New Mexico, that was nothing more than a plaque describing what happened and when it happened.
There will always be a constant struggle, between those who wish to save the battlefields, and those who wish to turn them into development projects. Many of the major civil war battlefields were saved, but numerous others were replaced with urban development.
How many of the battlefields from the war of 1812, the Mexican war or the Indian wars have been preserved? For every battlefield that is saved, many are lost. Heck, many people of todays high school generation may not even know some of these battlefields exist. They should survery some random high school students from public schools and ask them to name famous American battlefields.
When I was in High school, they rarely covered or mentioned any of the battlefields in history class, as they focused mainly on the larger picture. Even my college professors have ignored discussing battles in detail, since they don't cosnider the "battles, dates, places, kings" to be important, and encourage students to focus on cause and effect instead. What happened, why it happened and what the result of that was.
Lastly, the Minnesota Democrats (DFL) had tried a number of years ago, to tear down historic Fort Snelling and replace it with a highway, so they wouldn't have to detour around it, but that idea was eventually defeated.

I went out there everyday I skipped school pretty much this year. The outlets to shop and smoke at the same time, out to Devils Den is always fun to run around and jump from rock to rock and crawl in between the cracks, plus I just like history and reading all the signs.

You preserve it as a memorial for those who gave their lives there and as an integral part of the history of this nation. Really, thats like syaing we should burn the Declaration of Independence for heat because its not doing anything "practical" just sitting there :rockbrow:
