View Full Version : Units that you miss (and you don't) from RA1

I really miss the V-2 (so much better than the V3 in RA2), the AT Mine-Layer (useful if you have the time to plant the mines), and the Cruiser (probably the most destructive long range weapon in the series, other than SWs). :color3::color4::evil:

But I thought the thief was pretty useless, if they aren't protecting their base, they I would just use a tanya instead.

The cruiser, that thing had the longest range in the game:D.

Yea, the cruiser was pretty bad to the bone. It was inaccurate though and that got anooying sometimes...Grenaders were cool too.

Seems like nobody's heard of the Soviet Missile sub around here...:|

It was good too, but couldn;t shoot far enough. I mostly played the orginal RA1 on play station when I was a kid, so I didn;t get to use it much anyway. :)

Just wondering there have been times where this weird black hole looking thing that travels acroos the map destroying everything in its way, what made that and was there any defence against it? I have only seen it on multiplayer against the comp and nowhere else.

I like those camo pillbox and wished they kept that around. O yeah, tesla tank ftw!

oh yes, I think that was a tornado of some kind, saw it once, almost thought of it as a time distortion or even a tesla storm (lol)

Oh, you mean that chrono vortex ? Each time when you used the chronosphere, you got a chance that that thing appeared.

Yeah, it was a side effect of Chronoshifting that wasn't known until after the device had already been used awhile. The Chrono Vortex and the destroyer experiment gone wrong were in there to show that messing with time was a dangerous and uncertain business.

The way to defend against it was to sacrifice it some rifle infantry. It would disappear after zapping out of existence a few units.

Also, it usually appears after 3-5 consistent uses of the Chronosphere, so by waiting a small bit between uses, you could help to avoid causing it in the first place. Thing is, by the time you've used it for the fourth or fifth time, the game was most likely reaching it's conclusion!:dead:

The problem is that it appears RANDOM on the map. It would be cool if it happened just inside your opponents base:D.

The problem is that it appears RANDOM on the map. It would be cool if it happened just inside your opponents base:D. Of course, then it wouldn't really be that much of a deterrent for using the Chronosphere; I believe the point of the Chrono Vortex is to show that the Chronosphere is still "bleeding edge" technology and has not yet been perfected. If the location of the Chrono Vortex could be controlled, it would be less effective of a demonstration of the relative ignorance of the Chronosphere's builders about the true complexity of Chronosphere travel.

the AT Mine-Layer (useful if you have the time to plant the mines)

DITTO I loved the mine layer, remember playing against my mum and laying tonnes and tonnes of mines all over so she couldn't get near my base, lost the game in the end though probably cos I spent more time laying mines than actually thinking about attacking her base

Yeah, that might be the most worthless C&C unit of any game.

Agreed. They shoulda made it so they worked like the china hacker from generals or at least gave it spy disguise abilities. I doubt that cash hacking was possible like it was in generals with the old RA1 engine, but it would still be cool.

No, the RA Radar Jammer is more worthless. The Spy to . Thief was MORE useful than both of them, unless it's vs Soviets going (missile) subs.

Fine, tell me how you'll use the thief.

Fine, tell me how you'll use the thief.

An early APC rush with a couple of those guys making a mad dash for the refinery comes to mind, that or simply sending them to an un-defended outpost to steal some cash. That's about it.

Meh... I loved exploiting the glitch on RA: Retaliation when you get the grenaders to shoot the ground, then time it to shoot at something far away... like a semi-cruiser....

I still sometimes play the classic Playstation version on my PSP.... once in a while.....

The RA grenade trick is pretty well-known, and I don't think it works online anyway, but it does in skirmish or missions.

Radar Jammer did suck large amounts of it. Spy was useful only if the enemy had subs or if you had gotten your tech center destroyed and lost the whole map. The problem with the thief was he couldn't steal enough money, only half of what's in a particular refinery. So at best you're making $500 per thief, and that's assuming that the refinery is 100% full and that you don't lose any APCs while you're at it.
