View Full Version : Lion's Daily Blurb - Mon., Tues., June 25-26
Years ago when I was growing up in small town America, an ice cream truck would come by the street we lived on just about every evening during the summer season. Of course us kids would listen for the familiar music that alerted us the truck was on the way, and we'd run to our parents and hit em up for some pocket change to get the cold yummy goodies. Fast forward to the present. Last Friday I'm sitting in my living room with the windows opened up. Off somewhere in the distance I heard what sounded like music from one of them old Jack in the Boxes. The tune was 'Mary Had a Little Lamb". It was strange, but the first thought that came to me was that ice cream truck from my younger days, and that's all it took. I jumped up from my chair, grabbed my wallet, and headed out to the front porch. THERE IT IS!...I said to myself as I watched it pass by my road and head up main street. THIS WAS EXCITING! I hadn't seen one of them in years. Hmmmm...it isn't coming back my road. I was a tad disappointed, but I ran back inside the house, grabbed the keys to my Jeep, and decided to chase it down. I went through the town, which only has two streets, and couldn't find the truck. I suppose since there weren't any kids out along the street, he just buzzed right on through to the next town. What a bummer. From what I've learned from the neighbors, that ice cream truck comes by on Fridays and Saturdays, so next time I'll be ready for it. :yummy:

Wow LION, you know what! They have stores now, like 7-11, and Kwike Mart, not to mention the big chains. You could save yourself a bundle just going to the grocery store. And if it makes you feel any better I will call the store ahead of time and have them play the music .....just for you. Besides who knows where they get these ice cream bars? (NOT USDA that's fer sure):hyper:
We use to have the the Helm's bakery truck come by our house. With fresh donuts, bread, rolls, etc. You would go out and have them open up the drawers of fresh baked stuff and it smelled so good. Now that I would grab my keys and go hunt them down. But ice cream......

When I was 6 I had two neighborhood friends. The ice cream man came down our street and one of my friend bought some ice cream from him... But the other kid and me made mud balls on the otherside of the road... Some rocks to.
My friend stopped the ice cream man, and my other friend and me pelted the ice cream van with mud and rocks and then ran. The ice cream man was stopped in front of the house of my friend who ordered the ice cream and yelled at his mom. It turns out our street was taken out of the route and because of our town not having many streets and houses at the time, they dumped the whole support of the town...
Yes... We were dumb, but I think it was worth it in the end. I've never heard that sweet, sweet jingle ever again though. :(

It was a ghost...one night when the wind is blowing and the moon has hidden itself behind the trees you'll hear that music again...only this time it will be right outside your bedroom door. :dismay:

I actually never got anything from the ice cream truck. If we wanted ice cream, we'd go to the store and buy some. Actually I take that back, I have once or twice.
yeah thats a classic home ice , yeah in my country i think its like one or 2 companies doing that and its pretty funny. i never buyed there myself but my parents and little sister been down the road many times.
a friend even singed a song that went like "we trick little children, we trick little children on their week pay.." :D another friend made the ice cream car as a eastegg in his c-s map too complete with sounds and all. :)

I see Lion spotting an ice-cream truck, jumping into his truck thru the window, and racing after. Ice-cream man freaks out and steps on it. The chase is on. Thru the dirt roads and highways it goes on for miles; ice-cream bars are thrown at Lion's car, and they finally block the windshield and jam the wipers. So now he has to look out of the car's side window to continue the chase. Suddenly the tire pops on the wheel of an ice-cream truck, and Lion, quick to use it to his advantage, rams the ice-cream-mobile, and nails it into a tree. "Whatta guy gotta do to get some ice-cream 'round here?"- says Lion lifting his head from a safety bag. :grumpy:
This is my prediction of what's gonna happen in a form of a short film script. Well, considering that 1 page of script is about one minute of film, an extremely short film.
Anyways, tell me if it turns out differently, Lion!

I know how you feel Lion, when I was a kid we always listened out for that familiar tune and ran to get money, ours used to be 12p for what was called a Special which was an Ice cream cone with one scoop and a rocket lolly stuck in it aw them were the days :D
We have one that comes down our street now, when he can be bothered that is and always seems to be when we are sat eating tea/dinner whatever you want to call it.

When I was a kid there were no ice cream vans, no lollies, no muffin man or mobile donuts. In fact we were lucky to have enough to eat at all! There was one or two exceptions though. We scrumped (stole) apples from orchards and dug up farmers potatoes when ever we could get away with it. In winter we would go down to the train marshalling yards and collect lumps of coal and stuff our pockets full and run like hell from the guards. Those nights we had a fire to keep warm.
One summer, when I was about seven, my brothers and I slipped into a farmers strawberry field and stuffed our faces and filled brown paper bags full of them big juicy suckers. The farmer saw us and gave chase with his shotgun. My brothers, who were bigger and faster runners than me ran home and told my mother that the farmer chased them with his gun. Mum said " where's "Wreck?" ( she actually used my real name :p). Well all my brothers said was they didn't know but they head a gunshot!
Just then I staggered in with a big red stain on my chest and my mother nearly had a heart attack. "My God, did he shoot you?" "Nah" I said, "I just fell down but the strawberries were up my shirt". Jeepers, my ass hurt like hell for a week after she slippered me. :D
The things we do just for a little food to put in our bellies!

We have an ice truck that comes down our road at undecided dates, but usually we hear it a couple blocks behind our house, but it takes it nearly an hour to finally get around to our house in the summer, and winter (r the people in my neighborhood insane, well, ice cream, snocones, and even firecracker popsicles r still worth it!!!), it always an exciting event, sometimes we don't hear it coming down our street, then suddenly if just passes our house, think I like to chase it down because of its sneaky craft...

Back when I lived with my grandparents, we lived on West Side, which was a street downtown that's...not desirable.
Anyhow, I stayed over there a lot and the Ice Cream Truck would come by at least 3-4 times a week and stop at the corner to Dale Street. I'd hit my grandma up for $1.25 and run up to stand in line and I always loved to get a big (like 44oz) Chocolate Shake.

Chocolate shakes, wow, wish our ice cream truck sold those, but it would deprive me of money...

A truck?!? I picture Lion charging down the street, roaring! He'll bite open the side of the truck before the ice cream man knows what hit 'em! :D
In my country, there is no such thing as an ice-cream truck. There is an ice-cream motorcycle instead!:D The motorcycle would have an extra box attached to its side. The ice-cream man would then park his motorcycle at the pavement when he sees kids. Believe it or not, many children could be seen crowding around the ice-cream motorcycle whenever it comes!:p

I don't see how two minutes of selfish fun was worth ruining it for any other children, but maybe I'm just old fashioned. In the Army we have a term for someone like you, it's called being 'jacked up'.
Also, Lion, these days pocket change won't get you a thing. All the treats are a least a dollar, it's insane.

Lucky you -- at least the ice-cream truck actually comes around with ice cream at least! Here all we get is this damn obnoxious neighbor and his old Ford pickup with some speakers attached to the back to blare out the old children's songs that went along with the trucks, so as to sucker you to coming outside gleefully for ice cream. Only problem is, as soon as you catch up to him (he drives fast) you find out that HE HAS NO ICE CREAM OR RELATED FOOD ITEMS WHATSOEVER. PERIOD.
I'm pretty sure that the neighborhood hates the damn bastard, though we have yet to figure where he lives (he usually comes around this time of the year, or whenever it's really hot outside and/or convient)... lucky for him, cause if the community ever finds him, he's gonna have HELL TO PAY!!!:gnasher:
