View Full Version : Is 1.70 GHz a good processor?

Title kinda says it all. The reason I'm asking is because ZH, which asks for a 1.8 GHz processor, runs uber-slow on my computer. And most new games are asking for at least 2.0 GHz, so my computer might explode if it tried running one of those.

lets just say you'll get less than optimal performance and for higher end games, don't even think about it, unless you plan on upgrading your motherboard with a higher end CPU capability

You could try to overclock your processor but if you have stock cooling, probably not a good idea. Look up your motherboard brand, check your socket type and look into a new processor. Probably your best bet, short of dealing with slow games.

How much RAM do you have?

If you get more RAM maybe 512MB to 1GB it should make ZH run better as well as the rest of the computer. RAM in that range is very cheap right now, somewhere around $30-$60 depending on where you get it. A good place for just about any computer parts is http://www.newegg.com

Yeah, I'm due for a new PC here, had this one since 2001. Our last one we had for even longer, and we upgraded the hard drive to 4GB :lmao:

what operating system are you using? If you have Windows XP or Vista with only 256MB of memory then thats why your computer is running slow. you should try upgrading your RAM memory

1.7? Old, old, old. Incredibly old. Upgrade the thing if possible, though a new computer is probably a better idea as that motherboard probably won't support any processor, memory or video card made in the last 3 years.

That's not entirely true. My Desktop computer was built May 15th 2001 and i can still get RAM for it... Just the Processor has been discontinued.. ;; (no 2.17ghz for me /cut) It just depends on his motherboard and Computer manufacturer. Al tho.. 1.7ghz today is really REALLY slow unless its a Core2Duo... which obviously it is not. Best bet is to visit www.newegg.com (http://www.newegg.com) Build a BRAND new spanking computer in Wish list then go out and see how much it would cost to fully upgrade the thing. If the cost of Upgrading is over the cost of a compleat new system then go ahead and trash the old system.
If you don't know how to build a computer, look online for instructions or go to a pre-built computer company (al tho will be expensive and stay FAR FAR away from Gateway & Dells. Gateway computers tend to die really quickly and dells computers suck for upgrading) and do what i said above. Definitely time to upgrade to 1GB of RAM and a better video card by far tho any way you look if you want to attempt to even salvage that ancient dog.

Oh...great. Just so happens that my PC is a Dell:ashamed:. My parents really are not willing to shell out enough money for a new computer (cheapos), so unless this thing spontaneously combusts or something I'm stuck with it. God, I hate this computer so much.

You can see about contacting DELL and see what they have for upgrades but don't be shocked if they try to get you to not do it....
DELL from past known people and very long chats with there very "Smart" Tech support people... (my aunts DELL Inspiron Notebook had hardware issue and there tech support... UGH.......!)
they will be against you opening the side to upgrade or anything. Not to mention they make there own motherboards so some things might be to small for it and others might not fit. For DELL systems taking the side off invalidates your Warranty >.> So virtually no upgrades from time of purchase till the warranty wears off can be installed...
(VERY RETARDED IMO) Wich is why if i know someone out shopping for dells i tell them to stay very far away from there computer line up. You can find and build a relitively cheap computer today, you can be very surprised. Take a cruise on NewEgg and look at desktops -> $200-300.
Here's one for $248... http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883114030
Tho it's not a really great company, a friend of mine has one like it sense his HP Pavilions Power Supply went and took out every hardware installed... thats what he went around and got. Not really a computer for gaming but it can be once upgraded a bit, and won't break the bank.. Also need to watch out, Vista from what i heard doesn't like Generals, but i can be sure later when my laptop gets done defragmenting so i can install the rest of my PC games on it.

Well, the plan is to have this one guy that we know build me a new computer while my parents get a Mac (uugh, macs suck:dead:). So far, that hasn't happened, and I doubt that it will, at least not until I get a laptop next year in preparation for college.

Ouch.. That sucks.. you can see about upgrading your RAM. Might give you a little bit of a perfomance increase. Just don't look for a godly increase in performance due to the slow processor.
Best way to find out whats all connected to your Motherboard as well as the Motherboard brand itself and what RAM you can upgrade to.. is this link.

It would probably be more cost effective to piece together a new computer rather than try to upgrade that one. I had a 1.7ghz P4 back in 2003 and even then it was showing its age.
Even a relatively low end comp with say a pentium E2000, 2GB of ram, and an x1950 pro would be cheap to piece together.
