Just recently, I've had a few problems with my computer. The first one is the fact that the screen always starts up very dim and this can't really be corrected by anything short of starting up and exiting Marathon (Strange, I know.). Another is that it is unable to switch to 256 colors mode for older applications, such as StarCraft. Currently, this has not caused much trouble, as I rarely play StarCraft now, but the dim screen is getting annoying.
I suspect that it may have something to do with Marathon, as this only began to occur when I changed its rendering mode to OpenGL. I tried swapping back to the previous setting, but the screen is still dim and the programs still refuse to cooperate.

I have attached a DxDiag document if that's of any help.

:rockbrow:You fail to mention what Monitor you have, and how old it is

I`d say your monitor is faulty.....

(if you have another to compare, then do so)

I really doubt it's my monitor, as it's only one or two years old. And I'm not really sure as to what kind it is either, but I believe it's an LCD monitor.

Check the drivers for the monitor....as well as your grafix drivers (try an older driver)

@Camel
If you read in the attached file it has the model number of monitor "Dell E196FP" under the "Display Devices" section.

@Delta-4
Try reinstalling the graphic drivers, it sounds like the OpenGL drivers messed up part of the GFX driver core when they were enabled by marathon

Well, I tried what you said and the programs I mentioned can start up now, but the screen still starts up dim. Oh, well, it's just a minor nuisance, I can deal with it.

Could be a defect with the monitor. Tried testing it on a seperate PC? If it's only a year or two old, might be under a three year warranty?

But yeah, the 256 colour thing definitely sounded like a graphics driver problem, so good that's fixed. Testing your system with another monitor would help too, just so you can isolate the problem's source.

Well, I don't really have another monitor to compare it with, and I'm far too poor to get a new one. Oh, well, I can manage. Thanks for the help, anyways.

Do you know any friends or relatives with a monitor you could borrow for a few hours?

I don't really have any friends or people who are friendly towards me with monitors they could lend and all of my relatives don't live on the same island as me.
The boat trip to get here is usually around $300, so I doubt they'd be willing to spend that much just to let me see if it's either my monitor or video card that's busted.

Would it be possible to increase the brightness setting on either your monitor or graphics driver settings? if you have the ATI RADEON series or something similar I can help you. Apparently according to the posts here nobody suggested or tried that :D

And uhh... pardon my asking, but what exactly IS marathon?
