I thought it interesting that an article on 'net trolls' was the cover story of the Tuesday edition of the USA Today, the #1 read newspaper in the nation. The headline read..."Rudeness, threats make the Web a cruel world". Ain't it the truth. I think most will agree that the internet has an 'anything-goes' atmosphere, and vulgar language and flame wars fill forums and blogs. Just about any website, including the DEN that allows visitors to communicate with each other, are fair game. I must say it's not easy balancing free speech with social etiquette. Where do ya draw the line? I've been battling net trolls for over 10 years now, and have tried my best to cope with them. I've lost count of the number of times I've been flamed personally. They haven't gotten the best of me cause I'm still here, plus I keep a fire extinguisher on board at all times. I do wonder to myself how peeps can be filled with so much hatred towards someone they've never met in person. Could it be they just don't like Lions? I realize some peeps post provocative statements to start a fire so to speak. They don't necessarily hate anyone. They get their jollies from stuff like that, or are simply starved for attention. A product of their environment? Who really knows for sure. For the most part I try not to take anything on the net too seriously. If I did, I'm quite sure I'd lose my sanity.

Speaking of trolls, there is someone impostering other people in the comments on CNCDen (primarily comments about the teaser image) making obscene remarks. You might want to check it out.

From Lion: Thanks Derek...took care of that problem today.

yup it would be better if you had to register to put your unique name on the Den's comment section since that would get rid of it altogether. For those who don't want to register it could give them a random nickname like on forumplanet.

Has for the Lion's Daily Blurb, I try to be as polite as i can since i don't want people flaming me at all since they don't even me if they just talk to me on msn or in chat no matter how long the convo lasted for. Yes though I have too gotten flamed by guys and gals alike just because they just don't care at all about the other person's feelings. I hope that this time does pass soon and there comes a time when the world can get along with each other.

It's too bad that people have to be so immature. Although some forums are good (like the DEN) but some others are real rude. I think on USA today you can comment on the stories they are reporting. Most peeps generally blurt out a rude statement knowing no one knows who they are. If they were to put their real name on it they might think differently. (or maybe not)

I finally gave up on playing hearts online because if a person starts losing they quit and make it totally ridiculous to play a whole game. Plus the the comments to other players was just outright immature. They would never say that to your face. (lest they want to die)

I am not quite sure what "net trolls" are though? Maybe peeps just bored to death!

The thing is people "insult" others because you cannot hurt that other person by putting your fist throught your monitor.

A good name for these "trolls" are cowards, if they were standing infront of you physically, they will not insult you in your face, but because the internet is a "wall", you don't know their true identity and you don't know where they live (I am not looking at a block of C4)

Lots of people are immature, and want to unleash it somewhere where they won't get a backlash physically. The internet is a good example of human behaviour.

Lion: About those imposters who post in the news comments on the front page, may I suggest displaying the posters IP address so everyone can tell that someones pretending to be someone else?

Agreed.
I have been play two of the most popular MMORPH's over the last 2 years now. WoW and GW.
And sometimes I'm rather shocked on how people can ... Well let's say between ingame and out there, there is a BIG difference.

People who feel alone (and who are even married), people who have stressfull jobs or even have it difficult to survive...all that stuff gets trashed out on the internet.
Sometimes I think it's a dumping place for feelings people don't want to show out there. :squint: So easy to act and do and say as you wish, no one knows you. (wich could lead to more serious concerns but i'll stay on topic here.)

The best you can do to protect yourself against it, is to take some distance I guess.
After all computer shut down = away trolls and other freaks out there.

PS
I have to admit even I have some social problems that are soon to be fixed. But I also "got rid" of my feelings online. Sometimes hurting people I cared about. :gnasher: (although it was never fully intened, it came more as a vulcano bursting out) Although I never seen or met them...strange how things can work out.

I don't want to display IP addresses...I record the IP addresses though, and ban the troublemakers. I also compare IP addresses in the comments section to the IPs on these forums and act accordingly. Usually the troublemakers are just passing through, and rarely return anyhow. It's the nature of the net trolls.

thats easy bud:

Swedish Bikini Team? Seriously, you guys got to have some of the best looking females on the planet in your Country, that would be a factor im sure.. :D

I also play WoW and that game, im not sure why, but it seems to be the worst one for flamers and kiddies. Most of it is just that, 10 year olds acting like they do.....Rude beyond imagination.

Aside from a few heated discussions that never got much past an initial flame war, this forum is deffo not on the list of places to worry about that.

As someone mentioned, when ya dont like it, turn it off. Thats what i do.

I have to contradict that, because I happen to know a group of middle school kids who use the school's science class comp's on their free time to play WOW and are actually pretty damn polite. Wheras in comparison, my best friend (who is 20, BTW) usually tends to go online for the sole purpose of griefing peeps in chat rooms and free online games. I even once caught him advertising online a link to Paris Hilton's sex tape to some StarCraft players on the servers under the premise that it was actually the SC Gundam Mod. Seriously.

This can be an accurence that happens a lot with noobs coming online with plenty of rude typing people, they can be influenced negatively by coming online and coming into a chatroom of rude talkers, but if the comments r shoved their way at the beginning, they too will learn their online experience as of someone with a short fuse, but if they stay out of trouble, and learn from some of the people with good hearts that treat noobs with respect (except those who state clearly that it is not a noob game, that I guess puts a small singe in my ways...), then they might help other beginners and chatting all around would become safer and less violent to peoples feelings, being a character, but not necesarily a violent one...
