View Full Version : Lion's Daily Blurb - Mon., Tues., Aug. 20-21
For the past week or so I changed the pace of my gaming a tad and participated in the beta testing of The Settlers 6: Rise of an Empire. This RTS game is much more focused on economy and city building (Medieval) than it is on military action, so it's not everyone's cup of tea. If you like to micro-manage to the extreme, then this is the game to check out. You have over 30 different buildings you can construct such as Butcher shops, Taverns, Bakeries, Mining, Fishing & Smokehouses, Sheep & Cattle farms, Dairy, Granaries, etc. You can build roads and walls too. The detail is taken to the MAX in this game, the graphics and animation will blow ya away. You can watch the butcher chop up meat, farmers milking cows, woodchoppers chopping trees, little villagers scurrying about picking up and delivering supplies, etc. Darn thing IS addictive. You can play one game for literally hours. My last one took nearly three hours. If ya want to take a break from the run n gun style of RTS playing, slow down the pace and concentrate on base building, then you'll enjoy playing this one for sure. Anyhoot, for those of ya interested, and I know it won't be many, visit the official website HERE (http://thesettlers.uk.ubi.com/home.php). Settlers 6 is due out in September, and I'm adding it to my collection of games.

i played this beta and though for some reason it ran really badly i still didn't like it much
the micromanaging thing is true, far too much of it imo
though if thats what you like then this would be a micromanager's wet dream
oh and the world in conflict beta kicked serious ass

Yep...I played the WIC beta and will buy the game when it's released. Another good game to add to my collection of RTS games.
And to Lazzers: Yes, Settlers 6 does have a lot of micro-managing, but the game was designed like that. Like I said, it isn't everyone's cup of tea, but it's nice to play for a change of pace. One of them stop-n-smell-the-roses games. I also play the Ager games, so I'm use to the extra micro-managing stuff.
So let me repeat myself again...Settlers 6 will NOT appeal to the masses. If your NOT into ultra micro-managing, you wouldn't like the game. For me it offers somewhat of a challenge and a bit deeper thought when compared to the standard RTS play of spamming units and the click fest that follows.

Man, thats not micromanagement. At least not the good kind. Micro is using two MDs and a Chinook to destroy both of your opponent's dozers and take out a couple of his chinooks without losing any units. Or taking a tech with three terrorists and two RPGs to destroy a WF, kill some trucks, scrap the tech, and then kill some dozers, again without losses. TBH what you're describing sounds more like economic macromanagement to me.

Well...whatever it is, I'm having fun and that's the name of the game. :D

It sounds like very complex economy management, as opposed to the term "micro" which is all about units. I tried Sid Meier's Railroads, which is all about growing the fattest rate of income the fastest, by figuring how to exploit the resources on the map better than your opponent. So you have to deal with multiple types of income, multiple resource types, and the threat of being bought out. (Blowing up tracks would have been fun, but the game didn't support that.) Sounds like Sim City with combat.

Sounds really cool, graphics and detail would detour me away from actually manageing my stuff though TBH

Now if only someone would combine Sim City with World in Conflict... man, that game would be the pwnage!!!:D:cool:
