I've been having a problem with my comp for several months now, and it's finally reach a point of ridiculousness. Thing was, I didn't know what the hell was up until now when I just tried to play several games that weren't exactly graphics-intensive these days (Rise of Nations and CNC Generals).

You see, some time ago I tried to update my graphics drivers via the website. It took some time, especially since I only got a -56k modem, but I eventually downloaded it in its entirety and then tried to install the update. It was good and all, until I ran into this notification: "You have chosen to install Catalyst Control Center. The minimum .NET framework version required is 2.0. Please install before launching application. " It had me confused since I had no clue as to what the heck were they talking about, so I eventually decided to go along with the install and deal with that question later... bad idea.

As always once installation is complete, I restarted the comp. But when the comp booted up to the desktop, I got the message that "The application failed to start properly 'xoc-1101010101blah-blah, click OK to terminate the application, yada-yada" as soon as the desktop finished loading. And that's not the worse part...

Afterwards, not only did my comp run slightly slower, but over time I began to realize that I couldn't run most of my games either before crashing due to a bevy of reasons. The biggest one seems to be graphics distortions that slowly build up to a crash, and sometimes just cause a game to be flat-out unplayable due to constant screen resolution changes and boot-ups. The only game that isn't effected is Starcraft and WarZone 2100, probably because they don't use 3D acceleration...

Honestly, I'm 100% clueless as to what's the real cause here. I've checked the official website for tech support, but nothing there seems to come close to what I've gotten myself into. I've even tried tinkering with the program itself, but keep getting the same damn message from the startup no matter what. I've even tried installing the program in different ways, but that seemed to make the damn thing even worse..

ANY suggestions would be appreciated, guys. Thanks for listening to me.

did you actually install net framework 2.0? as thats kinda critical for it to work

could try to run a system restore back to before you installed the drivers (put the drivers onto a CD or something to save you downloading it again) and install net framework first

Not only do I not have net framework 2.0, but I also don't have a damn clue as to what it is or does. (No, really, what the heck is that thing, man???):wtf:

And I'm afraid a system restore is out of the question, since this occured some time ago and the system restore program on my comp is really buggy to boot for some odd reason.

.Net Framework 2.0 is just that a framework. It contains all of the common background code and stuff that most programs need in order to work correctly. If you run Windows update through the website it will download it or you can download it from here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=0856eacb-4362-4b0d-8edd-aab15c5e04f5&displaylang=en
its only about 22.4 MB. My suggestion is to start the the download or windows update before you go to bed and let it run through the night.

After you've downloaded the framework, roll back the Catalyst drivers to the previous version (this can be done back uninstalling the new drivers using the "Add / Remove software" option under the control pane and then reinstalling the old drivers), install the framework and then reinstall the updated Catalyst drivers

This should take care of the start up problem. The other things that you mentioned might fix themselves after you install the framework.

alternatively try

properties>settings>advanced>adapter>properties>drivers and then roll back the driver

then install .net framework 2.0 and reinstall the drivers

Once you have the .Net framwork installed, the drivers might be able to work just fine without reinstalling.

I mean, in theory, they just call functions that you currently don't have, but once you do then it should all be fine. But as always, you'll have to try and see what happens. ^^

...And if my comp turns into a flaming wreck, I can take yours in exchange, right???:p

But seriously though, thanks guys. I already downloaded the file that ShadowClaw provided (did it on a college server MUCH faster than at home), and by tomorrow, I'll try and give it a shot. Here's to hoping another glitch doesn't surface...
