It seems like the Net.Framework update made things even worse. Now I can't even get my computer to recognise that it's actually running past 256 colors. Because of this, I can no longer run any game that requires anything above 256 colors at all. Furthermore, the ATI program still refuses to run, and now it's because of some issue that may as well make as much sense as a blue screen of death.

I really regret downloading that update...

Tried that, it just gave me one damn aggravating "Error. The backup could not be successfully completed.":gnasher:

Seriously man, I'm thinking that it's time that I just dump this piece of **** comp I now have for a new one...:hmm:

Now I feel bad for telling you to download that.:( Have you tried reinstalling the ATI drivers? If not, completely uninstall them before reinstalling. Cause I know that if the graphics drivers are not installed or not installed correctly windows will not go over 256 colors. What kind of ATI card do you have and what version of windows do you?

my old 9800 pro never game me any problems like this (though it eventually crapped out on me anyway)

try a driver roll back or complete uninstall then reinstall them and try again

Caution: The Catalyst™ Control Center requires that the Microsoft .NET Framework version 2.0 be installed. Without .NET version 2.0 installed, the Catalyst™ Control Center will not launch properly and the user will see an error message.

This is from ATI's web site and clarifies that the original error was caused by the .NET framework not being there. Also in the installation instructions it says that before you update the drivers you should should first uninstall the old drivers and a program called DAO.

this is page for the driver download for the XP drivers for your card. Also on this page is the install and release notes that I referenced in the top of this post.

Just reinstall the entire driver package, control center and all. It may be knackered because you tried it without .net2.0 and now that it has .net installed re-installing the driver package may cause it work properly.

I think I'm just gonna have to live without the 3-D acceleration or games on my comp. As it is my latest attempt at uninstalling and then reinstalling the program led to even more issues which were another hell of their own to get rid of, and now instead of the .MOM error, I now have the ATI program thinking that I'm not the system admin, despite there being only one identity on the comp.:wtf:

Just wondering something. Have you tried to go into safe mode-->Device Manager and make sure you only have one set of the 9800 installed? I had this problem years ago, and it was do to an extra set of drivers installed that I could not see except in safe mode. Just a thought.

Worst case: Format and start fresh. Can do a lot of good to a pc, sometimes.

I have a Radeon 9700 myself and use Omega drivers, they're alternatives to the Ati ones, tweaked a little to increase stability and/or performance ingame. I've never had any problems with them. You can get them here - http://www.omegadrivers.net/ati/win2k_xp.php. Don't forget to uninstall the old ones!

Also something that helps is to use drivercleaner to make sure everything is cleaned out first. Then install the new drivers.
