There in a .big file in the game directory called "MapsZH.big" for Generals (not Zero Hour) it's just called "Maps.big". You'll need a program to open it, FinalBIG.exe. You can download it here: http://cncden.com/cncgen_utility_downloads.shtml Just scroll down until you see -FinalBIG V0.2 (.BIG Editor/Extractor):
Now open up the Maps.big/MapsZH.big in FinalBIG. You'll see a list of all the map files & their other files like TGA, WAK, & INI. If you want to turn map into a custom map. Then extract the map file & any other files with the map name you want to the "My Documents\Command & Conquer Generals (Zero Hour) Data\Maps" folder. Now create a new folder with the map name as its name & put the files in there. Open up the map now in the world builder & go to the "Map Settings" in the "Edit" menu. You may see a map name there. Delete it. Otherwise the map won't show up in the game.
If you want to modify a map in the game so that when you play the map & you'll see the changes to the map, then extract the map files to the "Maps" folder in the game directory. Create a new folder with with the map name as its name & put the files in that folder. In the world builder, to open the map, click on "System Maps" & you should see the map there. Leave the map name as it is. If you modify this map & save it, it will affect the map in the game. To uninstall your changes, go back to the "Maps" folder in your game directory & either delete, rename, or move the map folder to a different place.
