View Full Version : Lion's Weekend Blurb - September 8-9
Years ago when I was a little Lion, I remember getting my very first G.I. Joe action figure. My best friend got one that same Christmas, and we played together for hours on end. G.I. Joe was American as apple pie and baseball. For us kids, this was OUR American Hero. Of course, over the years, and due to our politically correct obsessed society, G.I. Joe's American icon status has been somewhat diminished. It's soon gonna take a turn for the worse. According to THIS STORY (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,296054,00.html), the Hollywood movie makers will be adding insult to injury with a G.I Joe movie due out in 2009. They want to downplay his original role as an American hero so as not to offend the rest of the world. In the movie, G.I. Joe will represent a name for an international group that will set out to defeat the bad guys. The Hollywood bigwigs are afraid the rest of the world won't accept a heroic US soldier due to the growing hatred towards America. What's ironic is the fact Hollywood is somewhat responsible for much of that hatred with the negativity they display towards their own country. They can have my heroic American G.I. Joe doll when they pull it from my cold dead hand.

Hollywood showing the US in a negative image? Come on! There are very few US movies that happen in wars that don't show the US as rescuers of the world. And *that's* what gets "us" (the rest of the world) annoyed at "you" (the USA). :p

Now that's just wrong. GI Joe has always been about the US of A kicking ass to the point of being cheesy, and that's what made it fun to watch even as an adult. By doing this, they're essentially throwing the whole idea of GI Joe out the window!:tantrum:

Hi Lion;
My first time posting and I thank you for having our banner on your site. Ours is going through changes and your link will return soon.
Being an actor - I'm not surprised at how Hollywood portrays some characters to be more "politically correct" to the public. Many scripts are written by writers who have their "realistic" vision of how the character should be portrayed and whom is best to play said character - BUT - the Hollywood "Execs" have their own idea of how a story should be told and whom should play the character. It's all about money in the long run.
Back in the "John Wayne" days the USA was heroic in films. Good, strong personalities portraying heroes and heroines! I served in the Navy from 68 thru 73 (Viet Nam Time) and I've seen how the world has changed about the USA. Some good - some bad. It's the way of the world and politics.
Hollywood will continue to produce films that they believe will bring in the "majority" of the public to make their money back. And cast whom they think will bring in the people to see it. Can you imagine "Leonardo DiCaprio" playing the role of "GI Joe"? It could happen!
I too had GI Joe to play with! And they're NOT DOLLS! They're "action figures!"
Anyway - nice to be a part of the forum. Take care (and your cats too! We have two of our own!)

What are you talking about Lion? How is it Hollywood's fault that the world dislikes us. Virtually the entire world was on the United States side following 9/11, and our foreign policies and stupid President have understandably turned that around.

This GI Joe is based off of the comics made by marvel in the early 80's. This GI Joe has always been a task force that fought a Nod-esque force called Cobra. To the best of my knowledge this GI Joe never had anything to do with the original GI Joe other then using the name. These were the Joes that I grew up with, watching the cheesy cartoon that was nothing like the comics, or even the toys. They were the manly toy for boys back in my day. Infact I collect the current GI Joe comics being published by Devils Due. The current comics are far more realistic then the old ones, but still have a bit of the cheesy factor that makes them great.
As for the movie, I dont know what to think.
Yo Joe!

Please, lets not get into politics, anyway, I gave up GI Joe long ago for computer games, however the only reason I did was cause I thought they were too clunky, :D

How so? Explain. Because I happen to know a lot more about Politics than most people.

When Lion accuses the movie industry of causing the hate towards America, that is certainly getting into politics.

Well...let's see what the movie industry and actors have done for America.
HOLLYWOOD - Film star and director Mel Gibson launched a scathing attack on President George W. Bush, comparing his leadership to the barbaric rulers of the Mayan civilization in his 2006 film Apocalypto.
There's currently over a dozen movies being made or planned in the Hollywood movie industry with the subject of the Iraq war. Some of the movies will portray American soldiers as brutal thugs who rape and kill innocent Iraqi civilians. Most of the movies are geared towards anti-war sentiment. Hollywood can't make a realistic movie about the good the US soldiers are doing because it won't sell.
Actor Tim Robbins goes on HBO’s Real Time with Bill Maher and claims US Soldiers have killed over 400,000 Iraqi civilians since the start of the war. If that were the case, US soldiers would have to kill 300 Iraqis a day. It's just more slander against US troops.
And let's not forget Michael Moore...the slime that he is.
Anyhoot, I don't have the time to list the many, many anti-American and anti-US soldier stuff coming out of Hollywood. Just do a google search and read for yourself.

Because everyone takes Mel Gibson seriously now. And, I would say invading the wrong country constitutes as barbaric, anyway.
Really? Do you have any proof? I have not heard of these? They usually don't do that kind of thing until like after the war, such as with Vietnam. Speaking of the, we know it did happen in Vietnam. I am not saying it happens all the time in Iraq, but you cannot claim that it never does either. And there are some things that have gone public that could give movies a basis, such as this. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abu_Ghraib_prisoner_abuse
(This links to the Abu Ghraib article on Wikipedia, which contains censored images from the event, which you almost certainly have seen. If not, proceed at you own peril; I don't know this board's specific rules on linking to things, but I would rather be safe than sorry by explaining everything here.)
And now that I think about it, it is certainly possible that the movies, if they exist, would be about this.
Alright, first of all, it would be 244 a day. Secondly, I have not seen that episode of Bill Maher, but could you get me a full quote, in context? Bill Maher is an extremely sensible person. I seriously doubt that he would believe that, just because someone said it. I would assume that they said just 400,000 have died, not necessarily from US troops. That would make a lot more sense seeing as there seems to be a car bomb every day now that kill quite a few people.
However:
Total Deaths "As of June 2006: 654,965 (range of 392,979–942,636). 601,027 were violent deaths (31% attributed to Coalition, 24% to others, 46% unknown)" (Wikipedia).
= 203,039 (range of 121,823-292,217) attributed to the coalition, and that is if absolutely none of the "Unkown" 46% were caused by the Coalition.
And let's not forget Michael Moore...the slime that he is.
You know, oddly enough, almost none of Micheal Moore's stuff has been proven to be lies. He makes a hell of a lot of good points.
Anyhoot, I don't have the time to list the many, many anti-American and anti-US soldier stuff coming out of Hollywood. Just do a google search and read for yourself.
Well, all you did is tell me that there may be a few isolated incidents that could show America in a bad light, most of which are extremely recent, or not even out yet. The rest of the world didn't stop liking us yesterday. The rest of the world disliking us does not come from Hollywood. Large parts of the world don't see our movies. I seriously doubt that almost anyone in Nigeria, Darfur, Russia, certainly not Iraq, most of the middle east, and virtually everyone else, cuddle up on the couch every Friday night to watch the new episode of Bill Maher. And even if they did, they would not necessarily believe it. If they listened to everything we said, then there wouldn't have been a war in the first place. And on top of that, saying that Micheal Moore makes people hate America, and not mentioning invading a country for no reason is sort of like not mentioning the elephant in the living room, especially when there is another elephant, that is standing by, idle, why hundreds of thousands of people are killed in a civil war in Africa. Oh wait, we can't go help with that, because we started one ourselves.

No, Lion's right. There are a lot of movies being made right now about the Iraq war, most of them probably negative. Listen to some talk shows, most of the celebrities, if asked about the Iraq war, probably won't say they support it. Anyways, have you heard of the Dixie Chicks? Those morons decided to say that they were ashamed that Bush was a Texan. I believe that didn't go over too well with people.

Yeah movies cost a lot because the commitie decides that people want flashy effects, so they then agonise over the script and water it down till its played as "safe" as possible. It's like watching the red army after Stalin's purges, all the fools out of their depth running about totally clueless. The fear of doing something wrong ends up with absolutely insane choises.
"G.I. Joe - Real American Hero"... - yeah that gets the "nostalgic adult" dollar
It's an international organisation.... - yeah that gets the "international" dollar
wow we have all the bases covered!
At least the cartoons were good:

Once again, I ask for a source here. I have never seen these. And you know, if I was from Texas, I would be ashamed that Bush was a Texan as well.
And once again, I must point out that the world already hates us, t cannot be retroactively caused by movies that are not out yet.
