View Full Version : Lion's Weekend Blurb - Sept. 29-30
A few weeks ago I had to replace one of my aging computers I use for work and general use. It was another DELL, and over the years I've purchased about half a dozen of them, and have had little problems with them. I had a choice of getting WINXP or Windows Vista as the OP system. Being the curious one, I had to check out Vista. I ordered the comp with 2 gigs of RAM. I read that Vista is a memory hog. My biggest concern was compatible drivers, but I was able to find updated drivers for everything I needed to hook up. Two weeks into using Vista, and I'm well pleased with my choice. No crashes yet, and everything seems to be stable. I suppose eventually I'll make the move and update my gaming comp to Vista so I can take advantage of Direct X10. Of course, I'll also have to purchase a DX10 compatible vid card too. It's on my to do list for next year. The gaming industry has already sucked my budget dry for this year.

2 gigs wasn't enough for my PC loaded with the Ultimate version. In Germany most of the Vista Ultimate gaming PCs are sold with 4 gigs of RAM. :|

About 2,000 Euros for a decent one.
Of course you could get a deluxe version for a few pennies more...:D

You don't really need Ultimate unless of course you have a Laptop or share desktops. I wish this laptop came with Ultimate so i can lock my bios, and my dual HDD's incase someone decides to steal this laptop.
Other then that, all my games so far have ran on Windows Vista. Some needed a separate Visa version download or ran in Compatibility for Windows XP SP-2.

The lure of Vista Ultimate has less to do with networking and more to do with eye candy. You can get the same network capabilities with Vista business.
My PCs will run with Vista Ultimate, but why would I use an OS that hogs between 700MB to 900MB while in idle. Vista Ultimate on a laptop is a joke. Tests have shown that you will experience up to 15% less battery juice than with XP. Vista also has a huge front door security leak that Microsoft hasn't plugged yet. While installing software you will need permission from the UAC, when that is given you have turned over full admin rights to the software being installed. Being that most users will download and install shareware amd internet plugins, that leaves a huge security hole for rouge software to infiltrate your system.
A couple of good articles on the subject of Vista.

Sorry to be a killjoy, but read this (http://www.xbitlabs.com/news/other/display/20070928125246.html)
Windows Vista is not really that good, it is very annoying with its security feature when you try to run a program, and if you switch the security feature off you open up a security hole.
I will be getting a two Quad core AMD Phenom CPU and a dual CPU motherboard for my computer and it will retrain Windows XP Pro until I really truely have to upgrade to Vista
