View Full Version : Flamerz Thread Moderation
To put a stop to the constant stream of bots posting spam and pr0n links and so forth that we've been seeing in the Flamerz lately, we've decided to enable moderation of new threads in that particular forum.
So, if for whatever reason you feel a need to post a new thread in Flamerz, you'll have to wait a little while until one of the mods approves it. You can still post normally in existing threads, and the rest of the forums are not affected.
Since very little really goes on Flamerz anyway, I don't expect this is going to be a life-changing event for most of you :p

Yeah, it was getting a bit crazy. Hopefully this will resolve the problems.

Why did all such posts appear in the flamerz, though? Does anybody know?
My Idea!
Oh yeah... Props to Rolk :p

Awesome. Now the flamerz can be used for what it was meant to be. To Flame!

I wondered the same thing. Maybe they knew that flamerz attracts stupidity?

This will definitely work.
Another option that you could try looking in to would be to require at least 1 post to actually make a thread in the Flamerz. We did this on my forums to stop the spam bots from making a lot of threads.

there's a good idea, perhaps this should be added on top of the "approve before it goes through" function, though the user should make at least 10 or so posts before being able to post in the flamerz

Or we could just add one of those dynamic verification boxes (the **** if i remember the proper term) to registration and that would stop bots at the source.

Those were a bit finicky to work with. They work well if the server has an up to date version of PHP. So depending on this server's setup, that's a valid option as well.

So far this will stop these spam bots in flaming, but this has no function to stop other threads, I agree that it will work for flamers, but it has happened in other threads before, but the one I refer you too is gone, and it was in TW modding, or maybe map modding

Yeah, sometimes the n00bs aren't spam-bots but still post stupid threads in flamerz. That's a reasonable number.
Just for an update, they are still posting in there, however the threads are moderated and you guys cannot see them.

Why not just moderate all new members until they have posted say 5 posts, by then you know they are a genuine member and can post freely.
On my forums we have a hack which automatically sends a thread for moderation if the member has less than 5 posts AND tries to post a [URL],[IMG] or [EMAIL] tag, which has virtually elminated bots altogether in the view of our members.

i got neg repped on this post. i wouldn't normally care but im not even flaming or attempting to be nasty for once.. this is the kind of idiocy that pushes good folk away from this community.

one of the spambots at least has moved into the community bullentin board.
It comes up with some rather.... inappropriate pictures for the middle of the medschool library :wtf:
If zombs idea is as good as it sounds probably is the best way to go; sounds more effective and wont be anymore work for you.

Ive sent files and instructions to mooman on msn, and he thinks its a good idea too so when the spambots disappear, you can all thank me :p
On the downside, moo dosn't know when he is going to be able to get on to install it, he's having some problems with the host here.

so far, the initial flamerz thread moderation has severely reduced the amount of spam bots. Zombie's suggestion is following through with cleanup and such.
but nevertheless, it was still a briliant idea. i'd like to see it in action!
