Actually thats not true.
There are already quite a number of super-microbes, and its not viruses you should be worried about its bacteria.
There are already several strains of practically impossible to treat bacteria, for example XDR-TB, a type of tuberculosis that is basically a death-certificate waiting to happen.
The real issue with bacteria is their unique ability to swap DNA. Unlike eukaryotes bacteria are able to swap various bits of DNA with each other even across species. (a feat that was thought impossible right up to its discovery).
So for example bacteria that have a gene that codes for penicillin-resistance probably werent originally pathological to humans; but this gene was able to be passed onto bacteria that _are_ pathological to humans.
A similar process can occur with bacteria for animals. Whilst they maynot be harmful to humans; constantly using antibiotics encourages active gene-swapping amongst bacteria; and eventually it will pass into bacteria that is harmful for humans; and we find that conventinal antibiotics dont work. Some bacteria, like XDR-TB have resistance to almost all antibiotic types we have and is virtually untreatable.
And its not as simple as simply "making new medication"; there is simply only so many ways in which antibiotics work; and most of these are derivatives from fungus. When we run out of new ones, and the bacteria swap resistance to them all (and they will find resistance to them all; they've been around about 3billion years longer than any multi-cellular organism on earth) we're pretty much out of options.
This all comes from someone who loves his meat and eats plenty of products that no doubt come from such farms; call me hypocritical, but the AB-resistance is actually a very valid concern hardly restricted to the meat-industry.
Its my personal opinion that bacteria will be the undoing of humanity; not WW3 or giant meteor or whatever. On the bright side; organisms originally from earth will probably always exist in the universe; just not in human form!
edit: sorry to get all heavy on what is just a funny advert :p
Also no Ive not spoken to the d00d in a while. I might MSN him next time he is on.
