Simple question. Do you prefer Modern, Historic, or Sci-fi?

I choose Sci-Fi simply because they usually have bigger guns:D and the story lines are (usually) more creative and interesting

I'm not a big Sci Fi FPS fan, but I love Half-Life and its expansions/sequals. My favorite genre would be historical ones, CoD being one of my favorite games ever. :p

I would also have to say historic. COD really sealed the deal for me, especially because of the amount of respect I have for the people that served back then (And nowadays of course).

I love Sci-Fi shooters because you can get some real awesome effects and what not. Large scale wars, insane violence, the whole deal. A Warhammer 40k shooter in all its glory would be excellent... something to make up for that shoddy Firewarrior game.

I like Modern shooters as well, if they pull it off correctly.

Historical shooters I'd have to say CoD and MoH in its prime.

And I love team fortress 2.

Hmmm I don't know... I've enjoyed shooters from various genres... I guess Sci -fi takes the lead though; especially those that bridge the gap between modern and future, like half life and halo.

In short, my favorite all time shooters are...

Half Life series
Counter Strike
Halo series

...and UT2k4 gets an honorable mention as well. I enjoy historic games... but not as much I guess. I probably shouldn't speak though, because I haven't played the call of duty series extensively.

Does anyone remember the cheat options you could unlock in the original medal of honor? Nothing like running around with a shotgun firing at 4x normal speed, infinite ammo, no reloads, and reflecting shots :D

I tend to switch between a few of them, I really enjoy playing Call of Dty 2 & 3, but I think they made the right choice going modern with Call of Duty 4, as it was getting a little repetitive. Having said that, when it comes to visuals and atmosphere, sci-fi does provide you with a really big kick at times. For example some of the levels in Halo 3, with the huge Forerunner structures, at times I just had to step back and say, "Damn, thats so awesome, what an imagination."

I chose Modern.

Only due to the fact I can't choose 2! I play alot of Sci-Fi FPS games too.

INFACT! I recently got Cliver Barkers Jericho. and I love it!

I am actually heavy into Sci-fi (mosty the written ones) but it is tough for me between historical (cause of Metal of Honor: Allied Assult) and sci-fi (heavy Halo fan) so I went with sci-fi.

Sci-fi. Only because you get to throw out realism and get creative in game design, with innovative weaponry/equipment (Link gun, jetpack, gravity gun) and objective-based gameplay (UT's Onslaught/Warfare or BF 2142's Titan) Not to mention Portal and Half-Life 2's puzzles, which would be impossible in a historic or modern setting.

Also, I like sci-fi a lot. The scale of the campaign settings...

2nd for me is miscellaneous, because that's where Gunz, TF2, and Dark Messiah of Might and Magic are, and I preferred them to anything I've played in the other two categories.

No answer to the poll, because genre does not affect my opinion of the game. I care much more about the gameplay than the setting. For the record, a short list of FPSs I like and have played a lot:

F.E.A.R.
HL
CS:S
TF2
Renegade

A better poll might have categories that attend more to the gameplay style.

For example, UT would be what I call a "twitch" or reflex shooter, Rainbow Six would be more tactical, Doom would be corridor, half life would be adventure, perhaps-- you get the idea.

I play games from all the mentioned types/subgenres but I think Sci-Fi are usually the most fun for myself. Daishi summed up the reasons why pretty well.

My choice would have to be the modern setting, especially after playing Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. That game managed to take the best of both the "twitch 'n gun" and tactical worlds and put them together in one awesome package!

Thats the idea, but even moreso I think things what makes a big difference is the "feel" of the game. Examples of this are things such as the lethality and accuracy of the guns. For example, in UT all guns are fairly accurate (and don't lose accuracy when moving or shooting) and low lethality, whereas in a game like CS:S the guns become inaccurate quickly when running or shooting, but it only takes a handful of hits to kill someone. FEAR then is slightly less lethal but more accurate, so overall you die about as fast as in CS:S. Then Renegade has accurate but very weak guns, so that a one on one fight with the basic rifle can last for ten or more seconds of circling before someone dies. Weapons also have a lot to do with this, TF2 has mostly over-the-top weapons, there is no assault rifle in the game and only one sub-machine gun (not in name, but in practice), and that is a somewhat weak back-up weapon for the sniper. Thus it is lacking in the most common weapon types in other games, but instead focuses on very class specific weapons that all are amazing in some situations, but terrible in others. This is in contrast to F.E.A.R., where almost the only gun used is the assault rifle, and the of the other weapons all but one (the pistols) are either either an SMG or some type of assault rifle.

I can't vote sincerely since all I have played is Renegade and Halo 1-2, but they were pretty good games all of them (has anyone here ever played sniper games?
Those are sooooo fun!!!)

I'd have to say futuristic/cartoony shooters, such as Halo, Conker, and Marathon. Silly and funny is what I enjoy most, but I've still got to have some serious, alien-fragging, Warthog-flipping, shotgun-whoring fun.
I'd also like to add that Serious Sam is probably up in my top five. That game was friggin' awesome in almost all regards.

I really don't care much about genre, but I voted sci-fi since that is the genre I play from most... I think.
