For some reason I just felt the need to post some of these random thoughts...
While I was in the shower, I thought of how awesome the Halo 3 theme song is on Guitar Hero 3. Then I thought about how I really need to buy GH3.
The sub-prime mortgage crisis has finally convinced me that Europe is correct on it's assumption of American people. America really is full of morons.

Jordan is a cool song. It's one of my favorites on GH2. Halo 3 is probably the best song to ever appear on Guitar Hero though. :)
Don't worry. I feel your pain...I don't even have the game. lol

Why are women drivers so much worse than men at driving? I mean aren't women supposed to be known for paying attention to detail and taking precautions?

Old People driving - Seriously get on my nerves. Espeiclaly if they have a stupidly fast car and probably don't realise what they're driving.
E.G - On my way to work yesterday, A women (roughly 60s) was driving a Subaru Impreza WRX STi (not exactly slow..) 40Mph in a 60 Zone, in the outside lane attempting to over-take some body else doing 40Mph... HELLO! To overtake someone doing 40Mph you need to do more than 40Mph!!

Another law of driving I have discovered: The competence of the average driver is inversly proporational to their wealth. In other words, rich people are terrible drivers. My hypothesized explanation for this is that because of their money they aren't worried about wrecking their car - they'll just buy a new one.

I agree! Very rarely I will see a rich person that can drive very well. However, they're usually in a sporty car, and I assume they've probbably taken lessons somewhere on how to race. Perhaps they enjoy going to the track for a few laps every so often too. Those are the only explanations I can think of.

My job requires that I drive. Sometimes I actually drive eight hours a day. I actually counted today how many times another driver put in me a dangerous situation, such as one that could put us in an accident, and what gender they were. There were ten incidents. Eight of those were by women drivers. Two were men. I'm working tomorrow as well as Saturday, so I will continue this. From what I recall from memory though, I seem to be cursing women more often than men during my job.

It's a biological fact women are not as good at direction finding as men are. Something to do with how their brains are wired.
And before the female population attacks me, women are better at other things - eg: list memorisation etc.
Basically, men are superior at visual spatial tasks (maps) and women better at language memory tasks. There are other things too, but I can't remember them.
Lol.

Women seem to usually be better at multitasking - except when driving. Statistically, you guys are wrong about female drivers though. Men have a lot more accidents, but it's also about equally compensated for by men driving a lot more miles than women do.
ItalianPenguin
12-20-2007, 06:05 PM
Not surprising that men are in more accidents since more of them drive and they drive more than women do, like you said.
Also, like both of you have said women are better than men at tasks also. For example, many top companies are now trying to hire more women as managers, as they seem to just simply be better at it.

The Spike TV show Manswers has claimed that women drivers are worse then men due to a car finance company's claim that for every seven out of ten car crashes that occur, a woman was responsible for causing it. I'm not too sure about this one though, since it did come from a show with a really obvious bias.

Found some data my insurance friend has. Basically, men have higher insurance rates because they do more driving. Women cause more accidents per mile than men, but men cause more of the bad crashes (ie more fatal accidents).
It's a biological fact women are not as good at direction finding as men are.
This is definitely true. There are a few specific guys I know who I won't give verbal directions to unless they are really easy, but I won't do it at all for a girl unless she really assures me she can handle it. I find it odd since women should be better at remembering things, but I guess men make the mental picture of how the roads line up better? Guys also seem to be able to reverse directions better without being told.

I remember seeing something about this before. Men are exponentially better at getting from point A to point B because they remember landmarks along the way. Pretty much when you tell a man to "turn left at this building," he's going to turn left at that building. So once they find their way there, men pretty much remember it for life. Women on the other hand try to go directly by road names or things of that nature. As we all known this works horribly, and fails in the end. lol

I don't know about that. I much prefer to be given street names, they're far less ambiguous. If your told to turn left at Smith Farm Rd. and you see a Smith Farm Rd., you know to turn left. If someone tells you to "turn left at the red brick building" they may have forgotten that there is a red brick building at the turn before as well. I only like landmarks if its something really obvious or something you already know from experience.

I should have been more precise. I mean landmarks such as a building that looks like a fish. I do this all the time for long trips, and my friends do also. I dunno, I'm just going off of what I've heard and personal experience.

I can definately attest to this - about two and a half years ago I finally decided to sell my Nintendo 64 along with a large amount of PS1 games I never used ...BIG mistake. Not only did Gamestop buy my system from me for only $40 (accessories and such included - btw, they only gave me two freakin dollars for the rumble pack!), but the most I could get out of a N64 game was about $5, tops. As for the PS1 games... they all sold for about $2 bucks each. Needless to say, I lost out big time that day.

So I have concluded my study of male vs female drivers. Today so many female drivers put me in a dangerous situation, I LOST TRACK of how high the number actually was. Needless to say I doubt within the next day men will be able to catch up to the women. If I ever become head of an insurance company, I'm going to add an option to specifically protect against accidents caused by women that won't make your rates go up (yes, I know this probably violates some kind of law, just work with me here). God, it's ****ing horrible. I'm still pissed off just from today.
On the complete opposite side, men were polite and took turns at intersections. It was a very safe and efficient day with men.

Like it or not, RA2 was a good game(not excluding YR which was horrible).
I once again stand corrected. I predicted the Wii would be a big surprise and not be the best seller(right on one, wrong on the other). I predicted the PS3 would be awesome and would be king like the PS2, and I predicted the 360 would fall short of both of those....whoops.

I like Guitar Hero, it's a good game. However, you should get Rockband. Rockband is a much better game. In GH you just get to play a guitar but in Rockband there is an Electric Guitar, a Bass Guitar, a drum set, and a microphone for singing. I've played it with my friend who owns it for the past couple of days and it kicks so much ass.

The Wii is a decent system, haven't had a chance to play one so I can't make an accurate judgment about it. Though I will say it has done better than the Gamecube. The PS3 is awesome but because of its high price it still is not capable of being the king that the PS2 was. And last but not least, the Xbox 360 has done quite well, much better than its predecessor in fact, IMHO. The only thing that bugs me about the 360 is the fact that any of the good games don't get below $50 or $60 for quite a while. It takes longer on that system than it does on the other systems.

I think the 360 games stay at such a high price for a longer period of time for one reason...they sell, and they sell well. If they didn't the prices would drop much sooner. It's all in the economics. I don't mind the higher price as long as it's a quality game.

Hello Mr. Italian Penguin, I think your problem with the Wii is that you don't have a game like Super Smash Bros. Brawl yet...
Not to mention there are barely any games for it yet (I just got one and I only have two games, the one that came with it and the extremely short and amusing The Simpsons Game)

I once had about 12 games for the Wii, and I got bored with almost all of them. The only games I have left are Twilight Princess, The Godfather: Blackhand Edition, Blazing Angels, Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, and Tiger Woods PGA Tour 08. The only reason I ever have my Wii still is because of Super Smash Bros Brawl...but one game isn't enough to make me keep playing a system.

You know, this really has been an amazing year for video games. Super Mario Galaxy, The Orange Box, Call of Duty 3, Crysis. All awesome games. And thats not even getting to the games that could have been GotY contenders in any other year, Metroid Prime 3, Halo 3, Rock Band, Stalker. I'd say Super Mario Galaxy, because it is your God-given duty as a hardcore gamer to pay tribute to the almighty Shigeru Miyamoto and any (and all) of his great holy works. Slipped my mind last night when I was typing that. I was so tired all day yesterday.
BTW, did anyone who posted in this thread finally get their gamertag's? I know Live went down this weekend because of the x-mas overload, but it was fine until Friday night.

For the record, I went with Galaxy. The reason being that one of the big reasons I want Crysis if for multiplayer, but I'm already still playing TF2 a lot, so I don't really need another multiplayer FPS right now.
A funny little sidestory to this, I walked up to the counter to pay for it and I heard the following exchange, something like,
Clerk: "So its times 8 with a critical, and then the 1.5..."
Man: "So its basically unstoppable"
I immediately knew what game they were talking about. E-cookie for anyone who can guess the game and explain what it means.

Sounds almost like conqueronline (if anyone has ever heard of it). 8 times with dragon gems, and then 1.5 for potency FTW!
Naw, i'm just joking, conquer is a FTP download client anyways, not storebought.
SOme of my thoughts:
RA2 was the best game released in its timespan by a long shot, in my opinion
YR stunk it up badly
Crysis looks fun, but i'm not really into FPS games
GH3 and Rock Band are both awesome games, played one and watched the other.
Super mario sunshine was pretty cool, but i was borrowing it so i didnt get very far. The rocket pack looks like fun =P
The Wii sounds fun, but from what i've heard, Penguin is right, it gets old.
I agree, this year has been bursting with great video games and computer games alike.

I've yet to get bored of my Wii. I've actually just brought it 'round to my parents house for New Years. Should be highly amusing watching them bounce around playing games! I've just got Jen Tomb Raider Anniversary for it, Pretty fun to play TBH.

No, this has nothing to do with criticals in TF2, which definately do not do 12 (8*1.5) times damage. I like the crits in TF2 though, because they reward aggressive players and break stalemates where a team has just put up a wall of people/turrets that can be healed faster than they can be damage.

Spies, ubercharges, and demomen are there for a reason.
And since critical hits are almost entirely random, also factoring in that the defenders will most likely gain points faster than the attackers, they will do little to break a stalemate of that kind.
So far, all I've seen critical hits do is imbalance what would have been a balanced fight. I've seen people do it to me as well as myself having done it to other people. While I'm not too bad as a Soldier or Demoman, I will admit that critical hits tend to make up a large enough portion of my score at times to just seem ridiculous. I've cleared out an entire sewer on 2Fort with just me and a Medic when I was a Soldier thanks to critical hits.
It also just tends to get stupid when you think you have enough health for a rocket jump or enough health to plant a rocket or grenade right in front of you 'cause a Scout won't back off with his baseball bat, but then a critical hit gets you killed.
Vons knock-off sodas really aren't that bad.

These all help too. The developers put a lot of things in the game in order to prevent stalemates, watch the developer commentaries and you'll see. But all these things need to be present for it to fully work. Spies are useless if the defense is large, demomen are useless if the terrain isn't right, and ubercharges can usually only take out two sentries at best. Its when you get all these things, including criticals working together that it works.

But you see, they're not almost entirely random, they're in fact quite consistant. As you score points, the probability of getting a critical rises quickly, then slowly drops back. This allows you to exploit streaks to great effect. While defenders due tend to score more points, criticals are also less useful to them.

And you know why you were able to clear out the sewer with criticals? Because you were on a spree. You got a couple kills first, and these increased your chance of getting a critical, which continued your spree. Just today (or maybe it was yesterday, tbh I forget) I was playing Granary as a Pyro, the enemy had us pinned down outside our second point, so I slipped behind their lines to the middle and started capturing. Pretty soon a scout showed up, I killed him. More people showed up, and I killed some more. Because of these kills, I started getting criticals, which allowed me to continue my streak. In the end I killed six or seven of their guys in the middle, stopping their offensive and allowing my team to break out of our second point. For my aggressive play I was awarded my criticals to use.

Now you're just being naive, you always take the same damage to yourself when rocket/pipebomb jumping (about 50 and 75, respectively), significantly less than the enemy takes, and criticals have no effect on it. You just aren't judging your jumps well.

Spies aren't useless with a large defense force, just trickier to manage. You have to pick your targets a whole Hell of a lot more and use acquired intel to pick routes that won't get you stuck behind a sentry in the middle of a hallway or running into a couple of Pryoes.
As far as I've seen, only distance impedes a Demoman when it comes to terrain. The Demoman has basically been the class that ignores terrain for me.

Me and the medic were going into the sewers. A Heavy, Medic, and Engineer, as well as a few others I can't remember, had set up camp in our base. I went in as usual, spraying rockets to intimidate the "defenders" on the long approach. The Heavy popped out with his Medic just out of view, healing him, and returned the favor by spraying his minigun. This turned into a long stalemate where neither side got much of anywhere. I had to back off a few times to let my Medic get fixed up, but it pretty much remained the same for a few minutes.
Eventually, though, I got a critical hit and that killed the Heavy's Medic. I charged in with a few reinforcements and we took the main sewer section with force, me taking quite a few sentry rounds to the ass in the process, but still coming through.
About that time, a counter-attack pushed into the sewer and turned it into an all-out, psychotic frenzy with rockets, grenades, syringes, body parts, and baseball bats flying everywhere. It eventually progressed to me standing alone and going on a rampage that can only be described as something that'd certainly fit in an action movie. There was a trickle of reinforcements from our side, but only a few Medics and Demomen every now and then. A lot of times, critical hits saved my ass from situations I would've never gotten out of without a damage boost. That's why I still feel that I shouldn't have lived in a balanced situation.
I know that may seem somewhat like an arrogant exaggeration, but I can tell you that I can remember the experience vividly even with my shattered attention span.

I'll see if I can find anything if I ever play another round.

Clearly you've never seen three sentries and dispensors blocking the alley on the first point of the third round of dustbowl. With a few pyros hanging around. A spy can literally not get through there, he will bump into something and that = death.
As far as I've seen, only distance impedes a Demoman when it comes to terrain. The Demoman has basically been the class that ignores terrain for me.
Distance is easy to compensate for, the pipebombs at a 45 degree angle have great range and don't lose damage like all the other weapons* However, pipebombs cannot go around corners, as long as the sentry is not hugging the corner, its immune to pipebombs, and walls don't always bounce grenades in the direction you need them too, there might not even be a wall to bounce them off of at all. This makes it impossible for the demoman to destroy the sentry.
"The rich get richer while the poor get poorer" is not what I call balance.
Just throwin' this out there; that's one of the reasons I despise War Rock.
Yes, but thats how you prevent stalemates. If a game gives the losing team an advantage then the natural outcome is a stalemate in which a better team can't make the final push to defeat the losing team. Most games do this indirectly by keeping the spawn points fixed while the front is pushed back to the losing team's spawn, thus shortening the distance they have to walk, effectively decreasing their spawn time and increasing the winning team's. To avoid this, the developers put in a lot of things to give the winning team the advantage, which makes stalemates (and as a side effect, comebacks) less common. Thats why the final captures on Well and Granary capture so fast. Now compare these maps to custom territory maps, stalemates are far more common on the custom maps, in fact the custom maps almost never end in anything but stalemates, which gets quite boring after awhile. As a plus, when you do make a comeback, its all the more dramatic.

Then everything went perfectly: A crit broke the stalemate, then once you were on a spree criticals started flowing out of your rocket launcher as a reward, allowing you to overcome the enemy.
My memory says differently, but that's failed me before. I'd test it out to be sure, but TF2 takes way too long to load up. I'll see if I can find anything if I ever play another round.
Trust me. Skyscraper would be impossible if rockets and pipebombs did normal damage to the users. It does greatly reduced and non-crit damage.
*I don't know why the developers did this, but all weapons except the sniper rifle, grandes, bombs, and criticals lose damage as the range increases. For example, a rocket at close range does >100 damage, a rocket at long range does around 20-30. A critical always does about 250. This means that at long range, you're losing damage and accuracy.
I need to lose this WH40K obsession I've been developing. I've actually had thoughts of getting some of the figurines. :scared:

And for the record, the answer was Pokemon. Dual weakness is 4 times damage, critical is 2 times (4*2=8), and same-type-attack-bonus is 1.5 times damage.

Yes, but I deleted it since the Imperial Guard got nerfed to nothing but grunt spam. I've only really played Tau, Necrons, and Guard so far, but I'm not holding my breath that the others are fine. Wouldn't be at all surprised if the Space Marines got the same treatment...
I can download it from Steam again at any time, but my hard drive's gettin' fairly cramped and having a game I don't like on there won't help.
Another thing is that I can't get online with any of the DoW games. It always gives me an invalid password or nickname error whenever I try to create an account, no matter what I do. I've stuck to Direct Host for playing with my friends so far, but I doubt we'd ever be able to pull together a sort of organized event that I'd be able to take part in.

So I took my HDD for my 360 over to my buddy's house last night for some GH3 action with all of the songs. He has a Halo 3 edition 360. The thing froze while loading the DLC for GH3. Had to restart it with the outside button. My profile got corrupted, and Gamertag recover services are still down for 360 from the overload. So now I have no access to any of my save files for any of my games until the service is back up.
It's going to be a long end to x-mas break if gamertag services aren't back up before Monday. =\

You know, they really ought to allow one to keep their data on a memory card like back in the days of the N64 and PS2. That way, if anything ever happens to your hardrive, you at least won't lose the entirety of your saves and records.

Good point. I guess it all equals out in the end though.
Here's how I break it down. Every 5-6 years a new console comes out. Lets say to build a decent gaming PC requires about $1000. Since we're talking about the 360, we'll go with the launch price of $400 USD.
My desktop as it is can barely run Gears of War for the minimum specs. I have an Athlon 64 3400+, 1 gig ram, and 128mb Geforce 6800. The computer is about three years old. At the time, pretty much everything was near top of the line. According to the min specs for Crysis, I shouldn't even dream about trying to run that game.
I dunno, maybe my logic is flawed but I think it all equals out in the end. Don't get me wrong, I love PC games, but I also love games in general.
Note: Finally got my gamertag back! Whoohoo!

I might still get one eventually. Not at least until the summer though when I get my job back.
