Or Be Hunted, the newest fiction from Phyre!
I originally started writing this for the story competition, but I was too late, so I'm gonna post it here now. Hope you enjoy it.
Or Be Hunted...
Raiken looked at the body in disbelief. Merely hours before the murder he was in love with this girl, and then she pulled the gun on him. He knew nobody could be trusted when you worked for the V.A.I.A, but Kyreen was different...or, he'd thought so. He stepped up to her bloodied corpse slowly, wiping the tears from his eyes. The DATlink buzzed from his hip,
Raiken smiled grimly. Perfect timing. He pulled it from his belt and tapped the linkup button, an image of his boss, Naiku flashed up on the screen.
"Raiken, can you get here within the hour?" she asked sharply. Raiken glanced at the lifeless corpse on his bed.
"No, we have a problem"
"Well it better be damned important to keep you from a priority two" she growled, "What is it?"
Raiken glanced at the body again, and turned the DATlink so that the camera would show Naiku.
She gasped in horror.
"Holy ***** Raiken, what's happened? Is that Kyreen?"
"She pulled a gun on me. EGE12, only the H.S.D.H are issued those, I think they're onto me." He said calmly
"Get to the office, now, if the Humanist Society is onto you, I want you safe" She said, fear in her eyes. Raiken tapped
the OFF button on the DATlink. An unusual turn of events, but not completely surprising, he thought. He had expected some type of murder attempt relatively soon, but Kyreen had been his companion for months. Life's a bitch, then you have to shoot the only one you care about.
Raiken pulled up to the office, officially, the association was licensed as a bookstore, but people used it as a library, as he walked in, Raiken looked around and saw a lot of familiar faces. Other than Naiku and himself, nobody in the building had the slightest clue as to the underground group using this as its base of operations. He smirked.
"Raiken, over here"
Raiken looked over to the office, Naiku was standing at the door. He walked over to her.
"You okay Raiken?" she asked, her face full of concern,
"Yes, but we have to do something about this" he grunted, pushing past her into the office.
Jesse walked to the front desk of the bookshop,
"I'm looking for Raiken," he grunted at the receptionist
"That's nice. I don't know anyone called Raiken, sorry!" she smiled cheerily. Jesse looked at her and grinned.
"Indeed? We shall see" he said, turning sharply and walking to his car.
Idiots... they couldn't possibly think he wouldn't know where he'd be at a time like this. Could they?
"Raiken, the situation is bad, I talked to Aimy and she thinks it's about the shootings last week" Naiku grimly stated in her usual business-like manner.
"But we didn't DO anything, we weren't even NEAR the high school when those kids shot everyone" Raiken sighed
"I know, but they blamed it on Vampyres, and the HSDH believe them, your name was mentioned too. They're saying you made the kids do this"
"***** it, Jesse's always had this vendetta and I'm willing to face-off, it's time one of us won." Raiken said, standing up suddenly. "I need to get him the message, can you arrange something to be sent to him?" he inquired
"Raiken, of course I can, but it's a very *****ing stupid ide- *****!" she screamed as the tinted window shattered and TEGTEG explosive slammed into the wall and fell to the floor with a THUD.
*****.
Raiken rammed his way through the door using his shoulder, Naiku closely followed. They fell down the steps onto a table. Everyone looked up as they ran through the shop. Raiken dived through the front door as the first explosion shook the shop floor, the customers screamed and ran for the door. He pulled his car door open with force, jumped in and revved the car,
waiting for Naiku to get in. She didn't take long. The second explosion was bigger, obviously more TEGTEG was in the office. Within a minute, Raiken was going 80 down mainstreet towards Humanist Society HQ.
"Raiken, stop. We can't ambushg HS-HQ... they think we're dead, at least, they think YOU'RE dead. Nobody knows my identity. Take me back to my place, and I'll pin down Jesse on my bike, you DON'T need to get involved in this, not any more than you already are."
"Naiku, I have to, he tried to KILL me, he set up an assassin for me, he FRAMED me, this guy is my respons-"
"-He knows what you look like, you'd be dead before you could pull a gun on the guy, let me handle this" she said, trying to force the words she knew he didn't want to hear. Raiken looked at her reluctantly.
"You're right, we're on the way"
Naiku swung her leg over the bike, pulling the visor over her face. Jesse was gonna pay for this, she couldn't afford her best agent to be in the press at this moment. She revved up the bike and pulled out of the garage, turning towards HSDH headquarters. It wouldn't take long to get there, and she knew that after an attack like this, Jesse would be heading there
to get some sort of status report. She could head him off on the highway.
It was laughable, he'd snuck around the back of the bookshop, and sure enough, with the help of a directional microphone, there was Raiken, letting his guard down... again. One of the easiest days of Jesse's career. He smiled and sped the motorbike up as he drove down the highway. Looking around, there were very few people on the road today, infact, looking through his mirrors, there was only one other bike on the road. Go figure. Jesse looked forward agnain and decided whether to return to HQ, or to have a holiday. Both sounded good. Just as he was thinking this, he heard a gunshot. Surprised, he checked his mirror again.
*****!
That other bike, it was catching up fast, and the driver had a gun aimed vaguely in his direction. Jesse pulled his EGE12 from it's holster on his leg and aimed it directly at Naiku, who was catching up rapidly. He gripped the brakes on his, swinging it round to face her, pulled the trigger one, two, three times. She dropped from the back of her bike and rolled as it crashed into a barrier loudly. Jesse slowly climbed off of his own bike and walked towards her.
"Stay the hell down and answer my questions!" he growled. Naniku raised her head slowly from her crumpled body. Blood was coming from her hip and stomach, soaking through her clothes.
"Who are you? Why were you attacking me?" he growled, Naiku spat at him.
"He's dead, why don't you give up?" he yelled.
"It's not the dead you should FEAR, it's who's not dead that matters." she choked, grinning heavily.
"I want to know what's going on, right now, tell me or this gets a whole lot worse, hybrid" he shouted, his anger flaring, he raised the gun to her temple.
"Kill me and you'll know" she grinned again.
"I might just ****ing kill you if you don't SPIT IT OUT!"
"I'm already dead... and so are you, humanist!" she screamed. Jesse fired the gun again, his face screwed in contempt.
"Bitch." he yelled at the lifeless body of Naiku, continuing to fire the gun at her.
"If I were you, I'd save my ammunition... it's ridiculously expensive recently" a throaty voice said from behind him. Jesse turned to see the one person he didn't expect.
Raiken's gun was already aimed, Jesse didn't have a chance. Raiken fired once. The bullet hit Jesse in the right eye, dead centre. He smiled.
"Bitch."
