After watching several of the old Tiberian Sun movies, I noticed something abut CABAL: the screen on which his face is displayed closely resembles HAL's camera (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Hal-9000.jpg) from 2001: A Space Odyssey; the resemblance is best seen at the end of this video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=swVLGhyzLOQ). So that got me wondering: just how early in the design of Tiberian Sun and Firestorm did Westwood decide that CABAL would eventually go rogue?

In other words, by the time the Montauk set for the Tiberian Sun FMVs had been completed, somebody had decided that CABAL's appearance should be reminiscent of the "original" rogue A.I., so was that just a coincidence or did the designers intend to foreshadow Firestorm.

this is bad rumoring. it doesnt hold any water. cabal is a AI entity, HAL is a AI entity. 2001 came out before Westwood made Tiberian Sun. It is not uncommon for designers to take influence from other works as inspiration. and also, hal did not have a blue face that had moving lips.

Similarity is irrelevant. And I doubt they knew cabal would go rogue when they began tiberian sun. perhaps it crossed thier minds as a possible thing for a sequel or expansion. I dont think they decided on it until they knew they were going to do a expansion.

Besides, Cabal IS Kane.

It is not uncommon for designers to take influence from other works as inspiration. I never argued otherwise; I merely noted that the inspiration that they used for the design of CABAL's eye was from another AI whose name is an acronym and who eventual goes rogue.

and also, hal did not have a blue face that had moving lips. I didn't say that CABAL was an exact copy of HAL, I said that their "eyes" looked similar. Also, CABAL's face was usually red during Tiberian Sun, and he did not have a very distinct face until Firestorm.

I dont think they decided on it until they knew they were going to do a expansion. I had heard that Tiberian Sun was released before it was finished, so perhaps they had originally planned for CABAL to go rogue during the Tiberian Sun campaign, but that portion of the campaign got cut.

Besides, Cabal IS Kane. Which is a BIG twist at the end of Firestorm. CABAL's apparent betrayal happens long before the big reveal of CABAL's nature, so his apparent betrayal would appear, to the Player, as an actual betrayal.

well, good points you have.

but i looked and the only thing the 2 of em have in common is they are viewed through a circle shape. Hal was just a red light. Cabal was a complete video display, with a circle shaped screen.

but all hal shows is a red glow. cabals circle is different shaped and shows no red glow, other then when cabals face appears, and it shoes other information and stuff in it.
