So...

Does anyone else have standard control groups they use?

1 is my main attack force

2 is scouts/ secondary attack force

4 is any repair units I have

5 is transport aircraft/ artillery

6 is my main naval force

7 is my helicoptor/flying infantry. If they're not there, it's my heavy ships

8 is my main air group. Usually fighters, though C&C3 messed this up, and made my Orcas 8

9 is my bomber wing. In C&C 3 its my main Firehawk force.

0 is my commando

I used to use control groups like that, but "outgrew" that. Nowadays, I use select same unit more often or even select all units. (both on my mouse)
I still use the control groups mbut not more than 3, depending on what I am using to attack. GRAVE is always my oretrucks though and 0 is always units I don't want to lose on the battlefield (engineers, commando, spies, whatever)

I only really use control groups in Generals and CNC3, but I use it for micromanagement, not for macromanagement. I will split my main assault into a ton of different control groups depending on its person (Infantry, tank, air,) and its counter type (AA, Anti inf, anti tank, anti building). And sometimes its role in the battle (frontliner, flanker, artilery, etc). Basically it comes out to be this:

1) Main anti tank vehicle force
2) Main anti infantry vehicle force
3) Mani Anti tank infantry force
4) Main anti infantry infantry force
5) any anti air forces (If applicable)
6) Main artillery
7) Flankers (If applicable)
8) Support aircraft
9) Commandos (If applicable)

I barely even use control groups in the off chance that I do find myself playing an RTS. Odds are that I'm never going to split the units that go out and many of my units are often reserved for defense until a final push or sometimes permanently, such as my tank flanks in Dawn of War. The few times that I do hotkey units are often in Sins of a Solar Empire when I reach the later tiers; I usually have a massive fleet spearheaded by my flagship reserved for home system defense, while a much smaller division conquers other systems.

To be honest, I think I may have actually renamed more capital ships in Sins of a Solar Empire than I have made control groups in all of my games combined.

1 - tanks
5 - airplanes
0 - hero

Other than that it depends on the game and what I'm building. Rocketeers end up being 3 if I'm massing early, 6 if later because artillery/seige type units are usually 3. 6-9 often all end up ships on naval maps, or at least 7-9.

Yes, yes I do, ever since the first game.

1: First set of aircraft/Large group attack force if former is non applicable.
2: Second set of aircraft
3: Support aircraft/Transports
4: Engineers/Repair vehicals
5: Infantry or Commando
6: Anti infantry vehicals
7: Anti aircraft vehicals
8: Main battle tank
9: Artillery
0: Apocalypse tanks or Mammoth tanks

It's nice to see I'm not crazy, and other people do this as well.

I'm a simplton.

Land Units: Start at 1 and work my way up.
Aircraft: 0 and work my way down
Hover: Helicopters, Disc, whatnot, these are my main support units. I use them from defense to support (Expecially, say, a Helix equiped with Napalm Bomb and Propoganda Towers)

But its not rare to have a control scheme like this (Take note I play Generals more then any other C&C now, and when playing Generals I play AF)

1: Commanche Group 1 (About 20) (Used for Offense)
2: Commanche Group 2 (About 12) (Used for Defense)
3: 2 Raptors/Stealth Fighters
4: 2 Raptors/Stealth Fighters
5: 2 Raptors/Stealth Fighters
6: 2 Raptors/Stealth Fighters
7: 2 Raptors/Stealth Fighters
8: 2 Raptors/Stealth Fighters
9: 2 Aurora's (For general offense)
0: 6 Aurora's (Used only to take out super Weapons.)

Ask Fen. I suck with ground units. But I will double up my air force allot, in which case I just add onto the existing control groups.
About the biggest force looks like this (But it depends on how many airfields I can fit in my base)

1: Commanche Group 1 (40+) (Used for Offense)
2: Commanche Group 2 (20+) (Used for Defense)
3: 8 Raptors/Stealth Fighters
4: 8 Raptors/Stealth Fighters
5: 8 Raptors/Stealth Fighters
6: 8 Raptors/Stealth Fighters
7: 8 Raptors/Stealth Fighters
8: 8 Raptors/Stealth Fighters
9: 8 Aurora's (For general offense)
0: 8 Aurora's (Used only to take out super Weapons.)

any game i play that allows it i do this:
6- my special unit
1-5 ground attack forces, 1 and 2 usually being strike forces and 3 being either repair or artillery forces.
7-0 air strike groups, usually a entire airfield per number.
