" Any doubt was removed when the next word the computer offered was '*****ers', which it defined as 'a slang word for chavs'. "

In my opinion, it sounds educational.

Hey, its serious scrabble :p

Also,
A spokesman for Ubisoft said: 'We are sorry the game has caused concern, but it includes a "junior" option that stops it using unusual or offensive words.'
Typical parents not paying attention to the games they buy for their kids.

Well, technically swear words, or anything that isn't in a dictionary, are not valid answers for a game of Scrabble.

Shame on Ubisoft for not getting this right. The fact that a "Junior" option needs to be turned on to avoid the word "****" is a little obscene. :p

Swear words are any decent dictionary, and are perfectly valid in Scrabble.

True that swear words are in some dictionaries, most swear words (particularly of the 4 letter variety) are illegal in games of Scrabble. Or so says the up to date OWL Dictionary my friends got me for my last birthday.

Yes, I'm that pathetic.

We've tried to play "****" several times, but gotten shot down by the dictionary. One time a friend laid "bitch", and I tried to lay "****". Because, what better of a way to counter "bitch" than "****". Unfortunately, OWL said otherwise. :p

Well then OWL is a **** dictionary. Any decent dictionary documents swear words, since they are an integral part of the language. As for Scrabble specific rules, I don't know them, but I doubt it bans swear words.

Well then OWL is a **** dictionary.

Very likely! I was taught by the wisdom of my Great-Grandma, and supposedly the OWL dictionary is the "Official Scrabble Dictionary".

Really, I'm just sour that the dictionary stated "****" was not a legal followup to "Bitch". :p

There is in fact a "Scrabble Dictionary" which you can buy... so I would say THAT is the official Scrabble dictionary :p It's full of all sorts of bull**** words that only hardcore players know, and they ruin the fun for the rest of us! That's why I like to impose my favorite house rule: If someone challenges a word, not only must it be found in the dictionary, but the person who played it must first provide an accurate definition. That stops people from playing "Qaid" and other nonsense :p

Umm, there is an official Scrabble dictionary, and I'm pretty sure its called "The Official Scrabble Dictionary". Anyways, I asked a friend who plays scrabble a lot and he said that swear words are allowed.

Actually that sounds like a really good rule.

Close, technical name is "Official Scrabble Players Dictionary". (OSPD) :p

Anyways, I asked a friend who plays scrabble a lot and he said that swear words are allowed.

I play quite often as well, which is the only reason I decided to speak out on an otherwise completely asinine topic. :p Since the OWL Dictionary I have is on my bookshelf, maybe 5 feet away, I decided to look in the foreword to see if there was anything about swearing (yeah, things are that slow with me tonight). They mention nothing, except the OWL is derived mostly from the "Expurgated Scrabble Players Dictionary". So I looked that up; apparently the ESPD (initializing it so I don't have to type it again :p) is also known as the OSPD3, which is a version in which swear words or offensive words are not legal in a game of Scrabble. Supposedly the OSPD3 is an updated version of the OSPD, however if it is "canon" in the lore of Scrabble is lost on me.

TBH, I don't know why I'm talking about this in such depth. In the rare occasion that one is able to spell "****STICK", I feel one should be able to play that amazingly awesome word. Particularly if it is a Triple Word Score.

Trixxie: That house rule is great, and is often what my friends and I do. Because I ****ing hate a person who doesn't know what "QI" is, and places the "Q" on a Triple Letter Score. :p
