View Full Version : Are the Tiberian Sun campaigns worth playing?

I'm not by nature a moaner/ whiner but after getting this a few days ago because I enjoyed Red Alert 2 so much and I reading the rave review of TS in a 1999 PC Gamer, I had to express some dissatisfaction. I've played 4 GDI campaign missions so far and I'm boooored. It's been a chore more than anything else. Virtually no decisions or strategy to be made; churn out a few units, explore the maze like map a bit, get attacked by a few pesky enemies, get healed, complete objective. Or get toasted by way too powerful gun implacements. After 4 missions I moved on to another game. The cut scenes are disappointing too. Red Alert 2 scenes were quite silly really, but fun to watch. Tiberian Suns were like a poor Saturday morning kids sci fi series.

I haven't given up on TS and look forward to the skirmish mode, but the campaigns so far have left me cold

Wel, this is obviously opinion related, but I actually enjoyed the TS missions alot. Agreed, it's mostly build up and destroy, but I liked the settings and such in which you to do that very cool and enjoyable.

Well I thought TS was awesome.

Dont forget though its a 10 year old game. 10 years ago it _was_ amazing. By todays standards? Of course it isnt going to live up to it.

Still TS is still my favourite of all the C&C games, and if you dont like the cut scenes fair enough (even though there are some actually pretty decent actors in there, Michael Biehn, James Earl Jones, Patrick Bauchau to name a few off the top of my head), but I loved it!

Of course not everyone does, but remember to judge it kindly in the passage of time, few games from 10 years ago are that amazing still today (though this is one of them IMO).

The missions start off a little slowly yes, and perhaps dont have the variation of some games today, but its worth playing through and you do get changes as it goes on.
Ill assume you have it from TFD in which case that gives you FS as well; also worth a quick run through.

Ill warn you in advance though, the skirmish AI *sucks*, but actual MP is great fun.

Tiberian Sun wasn't perfect, review-wise. A quite a few magazines gave it an average rating, saying that the pace was slow, the balancing needed work (which it seriously did at first) and that it wasn't very innovative, just fancy.

Tiberian Sun SP rocks, MP blows.

all you do in multiplayer is either carryall/disruptor rush or subapc/cycommando rush. last time i played anyways.

IF EGI were to come around, he might be able to show you some of the advanced stuff out there on the MP scene, but since he's not popping up...:\

LOL... All I ever get is Orca Bomber/Banshee spam.

How is this any different from 99% of RTS games?

TS had by far the best singleplayer of any CNC game. The game was atmospheric, the story was good (well, relatively), the acting was fantastic (also relative, but seriously, James Earl Jones? Awesome!).

The cut scenes are disappointing too. Red Alert 2 scenes were quite silly really, but fun to watch. Tiberian Suns were like a poor Saturday morning kids sci fi series.
On the contrary, RA2's cutscenes were like a Saturday morning cartoon. Poor acting, cheesy plot, convoluted story. TS's acting was much, much better.

You've clearly never played Generals/ZH/RA3/SC/WC3/CoH/any other decent RTS where spam doesn't win the game.

I really enjoyed the game. The ONLY time I played online was a 1 v 1. I naturally lost but I did manage to take out his conyard early (and he took mines out) I was GDI and he as nod so his base was cloaked when I took out his conyard. I don't remember why we could not build another conyard but it ended up him doing a banshee rush. What was so funny was that he like over 30 banshees and only one pad. So after the first wave, it took him like 10 minutes to reload his banshees for another attack.

Anyvays SP was very cool for me. I really njoyd the fact you can make a very large map quickly.

TBH, The cutscenes and storyline were the part i enjoyed the most. The game was weak even for the time standards imo. Age of Empires and Warcraft2 were ahead of it. I know this is mostly about CnC games but even by that time it simply wasn't worth it, at least for me. RA2 was the first good shot.

True. The game was a lot better tough. Anyway i liked Yuri's and Lt Eva (this girl is just so...:p) acting sometimes.

Yep Stat. I have to agree with this. Even by that time SC would bring that argument down. In a non-CnC wave AOE2 would just teach what RTSs are made of.

Thing is, AOEII is pretty outdated itself by now. The fact that you have to constantly micro the farms, lest they go barren, is an example.

It's true the TS missions were all similar: build up, make a beautyful base, gather up forces, eliminate Nod.
But I liked the game. One of the best stories of all C&C games. Firestorm made it even better. I just liked Cabal as an enemy.
I remember I made two campaigns for Firestorm with that FinalSun editor, both with Cabal as an enemy.
Oh man, such joy of making those... I made up a story and all... I think the campaigns were even posted on CnCDen.

I was just playing Tiberian Sun again the other day actually (partly to help me get into the mood for the fan-fic I'm planning), and it's still as great as I remember it was. The graphics may be aged, but it doesn't matter, because the gameplay, story and cutscenes are all still as brilliant as ever.

and you know in that respect, building up a beautiful base, it was the best game *ever* IMO.

I loved on skirmish maps just building up a huge base and expanding across the entire map with Nod, cloaking everthing.

Ah! If only the AI had been any good!

I loved TS :D

i remember playing ts and wishing you could put snipers or something on top of the roofs of civy buildings. then BAM, very next game you could garrison buildings. I had a lot of ideas like this that came true.

Wait, are you saying you have in your possession that 1999 Tiberian Sun review issue of PC Gamer?! If so could you scan that?

Or did you mean you read the review way back in the day?

I personally happen to have both a review for PC Gamer magazine and Incite magazine in my possession. The Incite mag was better though, because in addition to the review, it came with a walkthrough and maps for the GDI campaign!

Then take pictures with a camera or scan them at a friend's house or scan them at a library or school or something. :(
