help your computer cheat you.
Well, as you can see, I’ve laid out an updated version of this (and the other) threads. One major thing to note, I’ve kept the old tips and files archived (as an attachment near the bottom of the page), so be sure to get a copy if you missed either one of these topics the first time around.
I am also going to do things a bit different this time. I’ve found that by just posting “New File” or “New Tip”, people who regularly look at this thread get confused when they want to see updates. Now, whenever I list a tip (or file for the other thread), I’m going to post the date (and time if I remember), so that everyone can keep up.
[6-22-05]
Source Sites: This is a newer category that I’m introducing (although I did list some stuff in the other thread), and this is where all of my “sources” will be listed. When I say “sources”, I mean the sites that make you look smart Without these sites, I’m nothing. This is the first time that I’m going to reveal nearly every source site that I use, so all of you can be on the inside track.
My personal favs:
Site 1: Digg
Now I’m sure some of you are familiar with Slashdot.org, but for those of you who are, it’s a news site that posts up articles about many different, yet interesting subjects. However, this site is now been killed! Kevin Rose, the G4/techtv guru, has created a site (www.digg.com) that has really hit Slashdot hard. Digg features news that are user (and administrator) submitted and covers several good categories. Categories ranging from “apple” to “gaming” to “music”, and from “movies” to even “technology”. It’s a great site where you can get the latest news on whatever’s interesting. It’s a great source. I make sure to check it everyday and since so many articles have been posted, I look at the archive to see what I’ve missed.
Site 2: Pricewatch
Now for most of you who even come to this thread, you are probably a newegg geek. I’ve used Newegg several times, but I’d say that it’s hardly the one-stop-shop for everything. Being the cheap guy that I am, I’m just not satisfied with some prices on certain sites. *Pricewatch enters the door*….now we have something. This site is really just a good search engine that helps you find the lowest prices on anything you want to buy (mainly in computer hardware/software/media, but it ranges to much more). Let’s say you want to search for a 200GB HDD. You type this in the search engine and it comes up with several results. It shows you a picture (if available), the specs, the price, and the price with shipping. This is a great site, and best of all, it includes Newegg.com in its searches.
Joystiq – Gaming Site! (http://www.joystiq.com/)
This is a great gaming site that includes major articles on current consoles, next-gen consoles, hand helds, PC and console gaming, and much more! This is definitely on my list of “sites that I visit everyday”!
Other Important Sites:
[6-22-05]
http://www.systm.org/
This site is really just a site that contains downloadable TV shows, made by several former members of TechTV. It’s mastermind Kevin Rose, who is to leave G4 at the end of the month, is working hard on the sites main releases. From what I’ve gathered, systm is a TV show, which is only distributed online. Apparently the show’s focus will be on technology. Now not much is know about this show because it is not downloadable until later on today (May 23rd), but not to worry, anything by Kevin is good enough for us. Also, this is where I’m going to interject……http://www.bittorrent.com/. BitTorrent is a program that allows you to transfer data at higher speeds because of the way the network works. Now before I get a moderator lurching around me, here’s my disclaimer :D
Disclaimer: BitTorrent is technically a legal open-source program. Whether it is illegal or legal depends on what data you are downloading/transferring. In order to use this program legally, you are telling the MPAA that you have a legal copy of the data that you are downloading, and that you are just using it for backup. Also, you can use it legally if you are downloading types of freeware, or software that is available to the public for free. Sites like Systm, TWIT, NASA, and more have put up (or will be putting up) their files in BitTorrent format. DOWNLOADING THESE IS COMPLETELY LEGAL. However, the BitTorrent client has/is being abused by many people. It is ILLEGAL to download files/songs/software/ect… if you do not already own a legal copy of them. The DGNF in no way promotes this kind of illegal downloading. I would also like to note, you will NOT be receiving a call from the MPAA or RIAA (or the BringonAA) if you download the types of files that are free and readily available to the public.
A site called Legal Torrents (http://www.legaltorrents.com/index.htm) is as you’ve figured, a site with collectivized content that is legal to download through the popular client, BitTorrent.
http://www.twit.tv/
TWIT stands for “This week in tech”. It is a tech program (show) that does what? Talks about tech! The creator of it has various TechTV members (and others too) give their opinions and announce their own tech news, via VoIP. What does this mean to you? It’s really just like a radio broadcast (show length varies, but some go for about an hour) with callers that never hang up until the show is over. The show outlines important news, events, articles, and much much more. Now at first, I admit that I was a skeptic. I didn’t really know what a “podcast” was (you will not have to knkow the definition for the test :p), and I really thought the entire idea was dumb. However, when I realized that it was basically a radio show with multiple call-ins by former TechTV peeps, I was hooked! It’s kind hard to explain (if you don’t understand by now), so you’ll have to go check it out for yourself. TWIT is recorded (and streamed) via their website, and also the first few episodes are downloadable via BitTorrent (you can download them legally btw). As you might of figured, they put up 1 episode a week. It is put up on Sunday night at 12:00am (PST me thinks), so you might want to wait until Monday to grab it.

“free. receive-only. email. no set up.” As this tells us, it’s a free email site. The great thing about this is that you don’t have to set up a new email account or password or any crap like that. Let’s say that a spammer wants you to put in your email to receive a “Free newsletter with a $10 purchase”. You can put in spammersaretehsuck@dodgeit.com and they will send the spam there! You can create whatever account name you want, and there’s not passwords or anything (you can pay extra to get it password protected, but why?)! This is my favorite site to use to divert spammers and stuff like that. It’s a great site.

PCMag has an interesting article on 10 things to do with your old PC. It’s a very good article, listing several good suggestions instead of listing goofy ways to blow up your computer. You can check out the article here (http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1759,1386999,00.asp)
The Tech Domain (http://thetechdomain.com/?p=15) is easily my favorite site that has tips on it. The tips range from system optimization for gaming, to tips on optimizing your computer for the games themselves (such as HL2 and Doom3), to even normal Windows XP tweaking, to links about benchmarking and overclocking. It’s by far one of the best, if not thee best site about tweaking.
This Intel (http://www.bigbruin.com/reviews05/intelcputip/index.php?file=1) and this AMD (http://www.bigbruin.com/reviews05/amdcputip/index.php?file=1) are good articles (yeah yeah bad grammar). This (http://users.tns.net/~skingery/firefox/firefox_tips.html) site is a good site for those of you who use the popular Firefox browser. It is mainly a compilation of good tips for the browser, as well as links to outside tweaks.
Now a day, if you have the know-how or a really nerdy kid, you can save a whole lot of money on a computer by building it yourself. However, the market for laptop hardware parts is hardly as big-meaning that you can’t get as low prices. At this point it time, it would probably be good just to buy a good laptop. This (http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1759,1819867,00.asp) is another PCMag article which lists some of the best laptops and even desktops.
This (http://www6.tomshardware.com/storage/20050530/index.html) article talks about saving and recovering your data after a crash. It’s very informative, especially for all of us who have experienced a hard drive crash.

6-26-05 Update: I’ve decided that even though these two threads aren’t completely done, I’m still going to post them up. This is mainly because before, I had incomplete topics, and I just updated them as I went along. EDIT: Check the archive of the old free Cheats/Tips below!
Well, as you can see, I’ve laid out an updated version of this (and the other) threads. One major thing to note, I’ve kept the old tips and files archived (as an attachment near the bottom of the page), so be sure to get a copy if you missed either one of these topics the first time around.

Great site that shows the insider secrets on copying music legally. I’ve personally read though this entire article and I have to say, it’s great. There’s some stuff in there I didn’t know (yeah I know, big big surprise), and I’m glad that I read it.

6-26-05 Update: I’ve decided that even though these two threads aren’t completely done, I’m still going to post them up. This is mainly because before, I had incomplete topics, and I just updated them as I went along. It’s a whole lot easier to just edit a few things in my post, rather than just trying to upgrade this word document, and never getting around to it! Enjoy :D
