Exclamation Red Alert 2/Yuri's revenge troubleshooting topic

As I see that many people have problems with RA2/YR malfunctioning, I tought it is relevant to make such a topic making things easier. This first post will be frequently updated with problem-solution paragraphs, but if that does not answer the question or it didn't helped out, people can still post here.

==Frequent problems==

1. My game doesn't start/black screen. I have XP/VISTA

RA2/YR are old games and running them on newer OS is sometimes problematic. Most of the time though it can be fixed by setting compatibility to windows 95. Here's how you do it:
Go to your RA2 directory (ussually CWestwood\RA2) and look for "game.exe" (for RA2) and gamemd.exe (YR). Right click on them, click on settings and go to the compability tab. Check the compatibility-mode box and choose for "windows 95" in the dropdown menu. Press "ok". In most cases it should work now. If it doesn't and you have Vista, you could try on top of that also to run as administrator. Again go to the compatibility tab and press on "view configuration for users. It'll open a small window in which you can tick off the "run as administrator" box. Do that and press ok.

If that still does not work, reinstall your game. Do this as following: go to start>menu> all programs> westwood> RA2 >unistall RA2. Make sure the box "remove files added after installation" is checked (if you have any custom maps, make sure you have moved them out of your directory). After unistall, remove your RA2 directory map also. Then reinstall. When you have installed RA2, make sure you patch it up to 1.006 before you install RA2.

If this does not help, detail out your problem in this topic. More is coming later . If other people have suggestions/ frequent problems with solution for it, then please post it up .

My game is running slow!
That is due to a plethora of in-game problems but mainly due to the game wanting to render things itself instead of using DirectDraw. This modified DLL is able to alleviate many slowdowns with Red Alert 2 and Tiberian Sun. The DLL is also known to fix WaveClass errors in Tiberian Sun. However, it does not work on every configuration for some reason. If you launch the game and have a black screen but can move the mouse and have audio, the DLL does not work. Even still, success rate is fairly high and should work on most machines.

(by fenring)

A second fix that might help is the following:
1. After updating to version 1.006, open your RA2 folder.
2. Move your original language.mix somewhere else (as backup)
3. Reinsert your Red Alert 2 CD.
4. Click Explore CD.
5. Open folder INSTALL.
6. Open Game1.
7. Copy this language.mix to your RA2 folder.

NOTE: this fix has drawbacks; the only currently known is that you cannot make r/dpl screenshots in online play anymore. Currently there is no known fix for it.

One for nvidia grahpic cards:

1. Right click on the desktop of your computer
2. Open up the NVIDIA controll panel
3. If prompted, click "advance" in the dialog box. If not prompted, make sure you are going to edit the advance options.
4. On the left in the "slect a task" box, under 3D Settings, go to "Manage 3D Settings"
5. In this, go to the second tab, labeled "program settings"
6. Click add and add the game's main .exe file
7. Next, go to the bottom text box and scroll down to where it says "Texture filtering - Quality"
8. Click on the drop box and select "High preformance"
9. Click the apply button on the bottom right of the screen

If it still does not work, turn off hardware acceleration, update your graphic drivers or buy an other graphics card.

Everything explodes right after the game begins!
This is the game's copy protection at work. This can happen to stock, legal games and the fix is easy - reinstall. However, this issue is more prevalent with illegal copies of the game. Should your copy be pirated, we will not assist you in any way so buy a legal copy of RA2 or The First Decade and come back.

I got this thing that said Internal Error. What do I do?
An Internal Error is an unhandled exception caused within the game's code. You did something the game did not like. This is most often seen while playing modifications but this can happen in the unmodified game. Unfortunately, there is no fix for any of the recurring ones left in the game. They are sporadic and very uncommon.

IEs left in the unmodified game;
- [YR] A Magnetron was attacking a structure and had its beam extended beyond its maximum attack range.
- [YR] A player who had mind controlled an undeployed MCV was defeated, causing a civilian-owned MCV to be present.
- [YR] A player who had mind controlled an undeployed MCV had its mind controlling unit destroyed but the original owner house had been defeated, causing a civilian-owned MCV to be present.

I have problems with red alert 2 playing network games

http://www.understorm.net/cnc/lan/ts_ra2.php

.:: Information ::.

With this patch installed you are able to play Tiberian Sun, Tiberian Sun: Firestorm,
Red Alert 2 and Red Alert 2: Yuri's Revenge over network by using the UDP protocol instead of the IPX protocol.

This means that you no longer have to install/configure IPX to be able to play these games on the local network.
The patch also adds Windows Vista and Windows Server 2008 support for LAN play
as these were broken because IPX is no longer supported on these platforms.

(by anthony g4i)

If it is though a common problem it is suggested to unistall and reinstall the complete game. Sometimes a file can get corrupted even if you did not altered it yourself.

If this does not help or you didn't found what you were looking for, detail out your problem in this topic. More is coming later . If other people have suggestions/ frequent problems with solution for it, then please post it up .

Set this on the appropriate section in ra2(md).ini;
Code:
[Video] VideoBackBuffer=no

Very much appreciated . Added. I also added a piece to your "My game is running slow!" solution.

I also suggest this topic gets stickied when it has grown.

I know there's more causes for Internal Errors and I'll keep a running tally but those are the more common three for YR. RA2 has random ones here and there, most especially after long skirmishes.

An IE can also be a common problem (without any modifications). I had that once and reinstalling solved it.

Reinstalling doesn't change the game's coding. That actually doesn't eliminate any known IEs... though it may possibly alleviate the random ones but I doubt it.

The game's slowdowns are not hardware exclusive. ATI and nVidia chipsets both suffer the same problems. The game (ie software) wants to render the graphics instead of the hardware. Changing that won't make a lick of difference. You need to either disable DirectDraw or use the DLL I provided. The same applies to updating the video drivers. Neither is a fix at all because it does not change the way the game handles drawing objects.

From what I have seen on the xwis forums help section, it does not seem always to be directdraw related. Although the other proposed solution are not perfect, it remains for the user of these solutions if he really wants to use them. I merely give suggestions which worked for some people. I'd like to note though however I do this is in the best interests of the people with problems.

Hi.

This is my first post here, so Hi everyone lol.

Anyway, i have a Dell Vostro 1500 running Windows XP Pro 32 bit, with much the same specs as the original poster. Including the Graphics Card, i read all this post and have found a solution to a slow running RA2. If you open up the Start Menu and go to Run, Type in "dxdiag" (minus the quotes) then hit enter, wait for it to load. Once its done click on the "Display" tab. Then Next to DirectDraw Acceleration make sures there is Disabled.

The attachment is what my screen looks like.

I tested this in RA2 under both 800x600 resolutions and 1280x800 and they both worked perfectly.

Hope this works for everyone else too!

I have XP SP3 on my notebook and desktop and the DLL works fine. I'm not sure of its track record on Vista though.

And that solution is globalizing what the DLL actually does. Bad idea.

red alert 2 playing with tcp/ ip protocol

http://www.understorm.net/cnc/lan/ts_ra2.php

.:: Information ::.
